  • Ready to buy 78 XS1100...please help!!

The only bikes I have owned have been Honda Shadows and I have done some pretty heavy riding on them. Sold my last one a couple of years ago...and have been itching for another bike since. But I want an older muscle bike.

I found this 1978 XS1100 for sale that I considering purchasing. Here are the details...

"Very reliable, turn key daily driver, and is currently my only method of transportation. clean and clear title.
1101 cc's of pure power. Electronic ignition, no points to deal with. Big 5.3 gallon gas tank. Shaft drive. Both tires are bridgestone Spitfire's. They both have lots of tread. The rear tire is only a couple of weeks old. Rear brake pads are only a couple weeks old as well, and the front pads have much life in them. The clutch was replaced about 3500 miles ago. The turn signals are for looks and the little speedo does work. The previous owner removed the original speedo and tach, as well had put on a drag bar that gave her a cafe look. The original brakelight, turn signal and license plate mount were removed as well and replaced with a side mount brake light/license plate mount. Looks a lot better that way!
I replaced the bars with something more comfortable. I still have the drag bar, I do not have the original speedo and tach though. I never knew how many miles were originally on the bike although it couldnt be many. When I replaced the clutch it wasnt worn, just glazed from not being ridden much
and the head gasket as well as the gasket where the cylinders and motor meet have no leaks. I get a lot of compliments on how good the old bike looks.
This bike starts easy, shifts like a champ, and pulls so hard sometimes its just downright scary. One of the funnest bikes ive ever ridden.
The only negatives there are about the bike is that the seat has a couple tears that I have covered with black duct tape and arent a big deal, and the valve cover gasket leaks a little on one side and is an easy and very cheap fix next time she gets a valve adjustment.
its a great bike that will bring someone a lot of enjoyment. Im buying a cruiser and will no longer need her services,
    $1400 obo"

I went and saw the bike. It is not in pristine condition, but looks good and everything is solid on it...it has the character that any muscle bike of that age SHOULD have. I am not interested in a 100% original bike...I like the side-mounted license plate and the aftermarket tach is fine for me. I think it good as it is.

I got him down to $1100. So...my question to you is...is that a good price for that bike? FYI...I live in Southern CA. Are there any red flags in his post that stand out to you?

However, I would like to tinker with it some...so my second question is...are parts for it expensive? I would like to get a seat with the high leather sissy bar in the back, a luggage rack with a hard box, maybe a fairing or small windshield. Are these parts going to be hard to come by and/or expensive?

Since you guys are the experts...I figure this is the best place to ask. If I do buy it, get ready for a new active member in your community!!!

I gotta decide by tmw. Thanks in advance for all your reponses!!

    Jason.

The sell for that price frequently. More or less depending on season and location. Used parts are readily available on ebay and through a member on this forum.
Lots of helpful people on here as well. Depending on where in Califoria you live, some owners may be able to help with hands on help.

Did you test ride it? Can you?

Buy it. You will love it.

Hey, no one can answer the price question for you, its is it worth it to you... I'd say that is an average asking price, I see lots of bikes listed around that price, however if you don't mind waiting you can often find a bike that needs minor work for a lot less. I don't see any re-flags in the add, and if it sounds and runs good it probably is a solid bike.
On the plus side if you do need help the folks here are always willing to give advice and lend a hand.

Parts aren't to bad, in line with most other bikes of that age I think, here and e-bay are going to be your best bets for most "cosmetic" stuff, you won't find seats or racks at your local dealer. Windshields are mostly universal and you shouldn't have a problem finding one you like that will fit.

Funny I was reading that same add earlier, not sure how far it would be for you but maybe you would consider these two as well, both look like very nice bikes as well.

I saw that bike there too. The handle bars are non stock and the Speedometer and tachometer are gone. Some aftermarket Spedo is in it's place. No telling what he did to the harness up there If you want to go back to the stock setup it can be rebuilt with the help of a good wiring diagram

Other that that the bike looked pretty ridable.

Plenty of help on this site though. Don't be shy.

                buy it

Hey Gringo,,,,after owning at least a half dozen of these bikes in various sizes, at that price, and assuming its in good running condition, Buy it. For 1100 bucks there isn't another bike out there that will give you more grins for the money. We have a few members by you that could help if needed. Try 1000 cash and have him put down selling price of 100 on the title transfer and it will save you 100 on the sales tax alone. Hey, these bikes are 30 years old and still are hard to beat for grins and eye catching looks from other riders.....Good Luck ,,,Mike in San Diego

Reading your replies (thanks!!) has got me thinking...should I hold out for a bike that is more stock? This one has the side-mounted plate with the read fender removed and after market tach. As I said it my original post...I like how it looks.

However, after I start to tinker with and become one of YOU guys (LOL), am I going to regret the fact that it has been altered so much...a thorn in my side as I try to improve it? Or will I relish it since it is unique? My goal isn't to get it back to stock...but I want to have options. In the big picture is this just small stuff I shouldn't sweat now? Thanks...

look through some of the threads on here. Some folks have painstakenly redone them back to stock and some have chopped the crap out of them. Your bike. Make it look like YOU want it.

I have an '87 VT1100 Shadow. I like my Shadow. It is a very nice bike.

I also have a couple of '79 XS11s. I have one warning. If you are used to Shadows, the XS is going to scare the crap outta you. It will embarrass a Shadow in all torque ranges. Seriously.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion....

If you like the way it looks, and you don't plan to go back to stock ever then go for it. It'll save you that much work and money in parts trying to make a stock one look the way you want. The biggest issue with bikes that are "modded" in my opinion is the wiring, have the owner pull the seat, take a look, does it look like someone that cared and had some clue what they were doing did the wiring mods for that tail light, or are wires cut, twisted, and taped? Same with that tach and speedo and stuff, although thats harder to see. If your comfortable with a multimeter and wiring diagram then it really doesn't matter, you can fix it up if it is done poorly.

Ok guys...I just found this one on eBay near me...

                          http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1981-...item3a58f3b1ba

It's an 81 and looks REALLY clean. Maybe pick it up for $1000.

Is there a good year or bad year? 78 or 81 better or worse? Thoughts on which of these 2 bikes are a better value? Thanks...

It's about a 2 hour drive to see it...but I could do it. I am looking at the details of the body style and it definitely changed from 78 to 81. The 78 has a much straighter line to it and looks beefier. The 81 has more of a curve to the body and looks slightly more "chopper-ish".

It is subtle, but I like the look of the 78 style better.
