Some people have used Harley mufflers with their old 4-2 header. You should be able to find some posts if you search. Im not sure exactly what they came off but you can usually find a nice cheap pair on craigslist.

Ditto on the Harley mufflers. Ebay has a large assortment of them, some at very reasonable prices. I think I read a thread on here where one of our fellow xs11 lovers put stock sportster mufflers on theirs and said they sounded great. They are plentiful as many Harley owners remove them to run drag pipes.

I have my local bike man saving me a pair of Harley mufflers. I could see if he has another nice set for you. He's only charging me $25! They are real nice, good chrome and all. You would have to make brackets, shouldn't be to hard. The mufflers I'm looking at have adjustable slide mounts on them. It looks like you just get a bolt and stick it through the peg hole, then slide it to where your bracket is and tighten it up.

Hey guys, also do you know what size main jets those who are running harley pipes switch too? I have a K&N filter. I was thinking 2 sizes up at the most.

Dogg, if your running good now, good plug color and all you change is the mufflers, I doubt you'll have to go more then 1 size up, and you may not need to change at all. Kinda depends on what mufflers you have now too, if they are already "after market" then you probably won't have to change your jets.

The Sportster and Dyna mufflers seem to be the ones easiest to find and adapt, with the '04-up Sporty ones being a popular choice due to the attachment bracketry. The only thing to look out for is HD is now putting catalytic convertors in the front one on most of the '09-up bikes, so if you can get two 'rears' you won't have to worry about fouling the convertor. There's also a 'crossover' hole on the Sporty versions you'll have to plug. The '82-03 Sporty mufflers won't have any extra holes and the front/rear mounts are slightly different, but are still a pretty easy install.

The ones with the cat are marked and they're otherwise identical, so it's not a hard thing to figure out.

I don't know what these are off of. I don't see any converter in em. When I look in I see a plate with a bunch of little bypass holes on either side of the plate. They look identical, I'd better take closer look to see what they are.

every stock HD muffler I've ever seen has the model and year stamped on the mufflers, right next to a part number and some legal bs about putting them on anything else being a big no-no according to blah blah blah.

Yeah they like to keep it HD. Who knows, maybe they could sue me for having HD pipes on my bike. I have to here it all the time from my dad.

This may sound crazy, but i just used a set of regular automotive glass packs with a 2 inch inlet. They are around $30 ea from any parts store. Amazon.com sells them for $16 ea. I painted mine black because most of them are red to start with. You can also get some in polished stainless. They arent exactly quiet but they arent too bad, quieter than most HDs

78 xs11 aftermarket 4-2 HD mufflers, whats left of it is stock. A work in progress for sure.

I seem to recall Ivan putting one of those on his scoot, and it wasn't the finger pointing or the laughing that made him give up on it (that type of stuff would only make Ivan more determined ) but IIRC he had real trouble getting the the jetting right due to the lack of any backpressure. These engines were designed for some, and they can get tough to tune without it.

I could be wrong, maybe it was the pointing and laughing, but I really think it was the difficulty in getting it to run really right.

JC Whitney's got a pretty wide selection... they look & sound pretty good.
Buddy of mine put a set of megaphones from them on his '79 Standard... worked out great.

I bought a set of their slash cuts for my XJ last summer... but had problems with their "universal' bracket... not very strong, and allowed the mufflers to shake... which would break my weld joints... so I don't use them anymore since I found a complete stock XJ exhaust.

If those would work for you, I'll make ya a good deal... PM me.

I thought about doing that, but I was gonna weld a piece of 2" long pipe in the end a little larger diameter than stock and hone them out to a nice even finish to have some back pressure. Wasn't sure how loud it would be though.
