Thats not for the bottom of the side cover is it?
I don't have an 81' either but that souldn't keep me from having a shot at this.
Looks like it was built so it wouldn't turn and it looks like it is built for a "Keeper" or an o-ring or something.
It is clean so something must have been over it.
End of my guesses.

Not for the side cover, to low and to far forward.
It does look kind of clean, but I didn't remove whatever was attached there. And I wasn't given any parts with the bike that might attache there either.1979 xs1100 Special -

Your chain and lock used to be attached to it.
Picture .....
The lock itself was attached to it to stop it from flapping in the wind.
There is no recorded instance of a theft ever being prevented by the world's weakest lock and chain.Last edited by melbxs; 03-23-2010, 02:13 AM.Melbourne, Australia. XS1100RH

Melbxs,
Thank you for solving this mystery for me too!!!
I have always wondered what that stud was for, and what purpose that plastic tube was intended for!
Now we know the rest of the story... with a picture too!!! Cool!

Cool, the top mount is already gone, and I wasn't given the lock or plastic tube it goes in so I guess I can remove that little do-dad and put it in the box with the rest of the spare parts....1979 xs1100 Special -
