  • Tomorrow is 70 and sunny...help!

But I can't seem to stop my floats from sticking open!! Or something! I just rebuilt my carbs with new plastic floats, new virago float valves, and rejetted for the new Mikexs pods and kerker. I had the bike running and got her synched up real nice. Then a couple hours later noticed #4 carb was leaking gas out of the pod. I then realized I had a leaking petcock..whatev. And my octy wasn't plugged into the vacuum port...whatev. The float valve should still be working and I knew I installed it correctly. So today I took of the carbs and looked at number 4 everything seemed righty oh. Raised it just a hair because maybe it was catching or something...put them back on and 3 of the 4 started leaking out of the pods!! Dang it!!

Is there something I don't understand about pods? Is the fuel line wiring crucial? I mean I know the obvious but I don't think I have the correct port on the petcock to the correct port on the octy...but that never hurt me before...

Tomorrow is supposed to be near 70 and sunny! Help!

(oh and I will check the oil for gas...)

    Thanks

Did you try beating on the float bowls with a screwdriver handle? The floats have a tendency to stick in the open position when first installed, and a nice "whack" helps to make them actualy float again.

Also, did you replace the bowl gaskets? The floats have almost NO clearance inside the bowls, and can hang up on even the slightest bit of gasket that hangs into the bowl.

Yeah, I would also say to check that the floats aren't hitting the gaskets. The floats can actually slide back and forth just a bit on the pin and get against any gasket intruding into the bowl.

Those floats also have an adjustment tang that keeps them from dropping too low. When the floats drop too low, the needle can become cocked in it's seat and prevent the float from rising and shutting off fuel. Whenever filling the float bowls when they're dry, do the carb bowl tap as mentioned above. On the bowl gaskets, the sides can usually be trimmed down a bit.

          Alas...

I have given up on my hope to ride tomorrow. I went out and checked the oil and started it up. It sounded pretty rough, so I must have messed with the synch when I took em off. None of them leaked when running, but when I turned her off the number 4 was still seeping...oh well. I guess I will take them off and check the gasket. For some reason I seem to believe that that was a reused gasket...but I could be wrong. At least it takes all of 3 minutes to remove the carbs now!!

Also found an oil leak at the front of my oil pan...dang it. Must not have distributed the RTV correctly....One day I will have the time to hit all of this.

          I still love her though!

          Thanks for the replies guys.

I had the same problem when I went to plastic floats, I had to trim a tiny bit off the edge furthest from the pivot so they wouldn't hang on the inside of the bowls.

              psycho...

I will will make sure just to go ahead and trim the gasket...also psychoreefer I was just looking at a thread you started about your rpm's not going down all the way until you put pressure on the linkage. Did you ever find out what was doing that? This morning I woke up early in hopes to figure something out, and then realized no matter where I put my master idle screw...it wouldn't drop below 2k rpm. I know its something probably just getting caught up or the new weird positioning of my throttle cable. I am trying to route my old throttle cable with my new drag bars...and it worked for a while, but it seems maybe it won't be consistent. Would a harley place have one that would work? Thats about the only bike shop around here.

I wasn't able to start up the bike last night so I'm not sure what was causing the high idle. The battery for that bike is being used to clean the tank via electrolysis, so tonight I should be able to test out a few ideas. The easiest way to find out if its the cable is to reach down and pull the cable out of the little holder that mounts to the top of the carbs. You shouldn't need to un-hook the actual end of the cable because once you've removed the cable from that holder its very loose. Thats what I did, but I wasn't able to start the bike to check....

Also I wasn't talking about trimming the gasket, I was saying I skimmed about 1/16" or a little more off the actual float itself. Just used a razor utility knife, cuts real easy. If you look through all my posts there might be a better description of what exactly I did.

If you had the carbs off make sure that the screws on the clamps for the engine side boots aren't hanging you up, I've done that once.

Not sure if a harley place would have a cable or not, never worked on a harley so no idea what they use for cables, couldn't hurt to stop and ask. Bring the old one with you and know how much shorter you want it.

Take the cable with you and they might be able to match one up for length, slightly longer (1/2" or so) might now be a bad thing. Might be just what the Doc ordered...

Blessed with a ride after all

Well the motorcycle gods looked favorably upon me and I got her all together and go to ride today. The carb issues worked themselves out...the float must have gotten un-hung. And the linkage was probably just hanging up on something...

I was upset to see a slight oil leak from my new CCT, guess my gasket wasn't too good, but I went to tighten it, and i could tighten the bolts and main screw (its an automatic) by hand so I think that may have hopefully fixed it...not sure the torgue that is supposed to be on those venturer CCTs but I just cranked it down.otherwise I will have to pull it sometime in the near future..

Also i was really impressed with the PODS acoutstic difference. It gave it a surprisingly throaty sound under a good twist of the throttle. Also did notice the loss of some low end...definately need to keep the rpm high on a good takeoff. But I am sure I gained it on the top end...just didn't really push it there.

SO thanks for the help guys! Mission accomplished!

I do the float bowl tap religiously! It only took one tank of gas smelling up my garage for me to learn my lesson. No problems with that anymore (so far)...
