  • Turn signal not flashing, indicator lit

I searched and didn't find this particular set of symptoms. Even at idle my right turn signal is working, but my left won't work even if a gas it and get the rpms up. I did blow a bulb in the front left, and replaced that. I also swapped out the old glass fuse box for TC's new fuse box. But it was doing this before I blew the bulb. Now I still have no turn signal, but the turn signal indicator on the instrument panel is stuck on for the left side.

    Anyone see this before?

PS. It did this before I changed the fuse box, so I don't think that's the culprit.

    Hey Fix,

Your turn signal flasher IS working because it's working for one side, so it'll work for the other side...once all the conditions are correct.

You'll need to do some more testing of the failing side. You replaced 1 bulb, but have you checked to make sure that the other bulb is the correct type and wattage?

Also, you'll want to check and clean ALL of the connectors for the signal lights, the rear is suspect because of the way it grounds inside the rear fender with that large washer around the bulb stalk. Also, check the bulb sockets and the wires for corrosion. Have found corrosion between the contacts of the ground strap for the bulb socket!! Once the circuit has the proper LOAD and has good continuity, it should flash just like the other side.

Also might check/take apart the handlebar switch to check for corrosion in the butterfly switch, as well as broken/weak solder joints for the contact plate that the wires attach to!

Thanks TC, I'll put all that on my menu for tomorrow. I have taken the handlebar switch partially apart, it was dirty but didn't look corroded. I'm taking it all the way down for a good cleaning and some dielectric grease tomorrow.

I checked the rear bulb and it looked good. I think a good check of all the connectors is in order.

Should I start up front, since that was the blown bulb (the bulb was also whitened inside, never seen a clear bulb do that)

In any case, wish me luck. I'll post a status of the battle tomorrow

        I second that

When I was checking my bike out, I flipped on the blinker and it worked, and 20 seconds later it stopped, but would just come on and not blink. I negotiated down an extra $25 for that.

Anyways, the problem was whoever put the fairing on last did a lousy job of connecting all the wires and the wire in charge of blinking (I guess it connects to the flasher) were disconnected on both sides. I had to get them both plugged in again before it started working. Now all is fine.

Hope it's that easy for you!

Occassional same issue was intermittant on my XS.......tracked it to the self cancelling relay under seat. Left side only, and when it did work, would'nt self cancel.....Replaced, all works as it should......JAT.

Where did you pick up a new relay? Wondering how much I might have to set aside.
