I doubt it, couldn't say why, just seems to good to be true, and well you know the saying.

I'm sure geezer will poke in here, he'd probably be able to tell you.

I recognize that first pic as a GM internal regulator but what is # 2?

Its the full wave rectifier that went on those alternators with that regulator. Usually mounted on the firewall on the right side, on pickups anyway.

Only thing I can't remember is if that regulator would self excite or not.

Sorry Tony It looks to me like they will work fine, wired correctly.Unless the regulator senses the field voltage on GM alternators. What am I missing? You know charging systems better than me.Please explain. Terry

Ok, you'd need four of these rectifiers and basically just use them as half-wave instead of full wave; if a guy could find half-wave units that would be better. So is the issue the regulator? I'd be curious to know the actual difference if any.

Well, you're half right. You will need a three-phase bridge. I've done it, it works but it's a very funky setup because of the way the Delco regulators mount and you've got to be careful with the insulating. The Delco 10Si regulator can be wired to self-excite.

Ivan I have to ask. Why? its not like regulators are like hens teeth or anything. Just a mental exercise or is there a mission here.?

Mostly just self enlightenment. If I ever get that far along in my project list, I have an extra spool from the alternator that was burned up, and would like to rewind it with smaller wire, to get more winds on it and maybe try to coax a few extra amps out of the charging system. If the alternator put out more watts, I am pretty sure the regulator wouldn't last long. I could be wrong. I haven't opened one up to see what they are made of and if they are good enough circuitry to handle a few extra watts continuously.

Right now the trouble is finding a source for shellacked winding wire that I don't have to buy 200lbs of to get my 6 ounces worth.
