makeshift carb holders for non Mikuni carbs...

After MUCH Guinness and Jameson on Wednesday....a few of us were sitting my garage thinking

I have two spare engines.....one i know runs...the other....not sure. The one that runs has MULTIPLE issues with the carbs that i may or may not be able to afford to fix.

a buddy of mine has a set of carbs off another bike that come close to fitting. What would prevent me from whacking down some heavy duty radiator hose make holder exentions to make them work??? i would fashion some sort of insert to clamp it down and seal the crap out of it.

Mind you...this engine wouldnt be going on a motorcycle right now...going to make a go-cart out of it. may even shoehorn it into a golf cart.....

this coming from a group of guys that half sober slammed a 455 Rocket into a Chevette just for $hits and grins!!!! It didnt last long, but it was fun!!!

If they almost fit why not use the stock rubbers, guy's have jammed GSXR carbs, FJ carbs, etc etc, that weren't exactly right into the stock holders. I think the process was to trim some of the rubber to make the initial line-up easier and then push real hard....

air cooling and lack of it JAT

Hi,
I would be concerned about that combo or running the motor off a fast moving vehicle due to the lack of high speed air to cool the engine.

I personally had one of these things come up for sale on craigs list a month or so ago, a guy had put a 900 honda air cooled ingine in a four wheeler. The engine sat in the traditional place behind the steering mechanism the four wheeler. Thats kind of a double whammy, sitting behind much larger apparatus, therefore blocking air flow, and being a slower moving vehicle , so air wouldnt flow over it. I didnt buy it of course. I personally wouldnt take a chance on ruining what may very well be a good running engine.

I could definitely see this working ok with a liquid cooled engine though, in fact last year a four wheeler came on cl, that had a liquid cooled Katana engine in it. JAT

I say go for it, if it seems to be getting to hot, add an oil cooler and an electric radiator fan to move some air around it.

Other option - drive faster!

I used to know a guy that had a Honda Odyssesy with a transplanted KZ1000 motor in it and he never had any issues with overheating. The motor sat behind the driver, but there wasn't any bodywork.

Went like hell too.... he eventually killed it, but that was due to running it at sandpits mostly and his air filter setup wasn't the best.

I was thinking about welding up some chrome moly steel tubes to flanges that would allow me to use rubber hose to mount a set of Kawasaki Z1R carbs I have stashed here. I'd love to lose the CV carbs off my XS11 for a better throttle response. Maybe one of these days....

Radiator hose isn't gas resistant....so I'm told. Otherwise, go for it. No rules when it comes to toys or fun!

There's some neoprene hose available in carb sizes but I don't remember where to get it. It shouldn't be that hard to find. If not, I'm sure some commonly available carb holders could be used. However it would mean adding a flange to the carb side of the manifold...

Look for marine coolant and fuel hose, it's about $10 per foot and is a buna-n material. However the places I looked at had a 5 foot minimum order.
