  • Left turn signal not working. . .

First off, thanks for all the replies on my stuck throttle issue I had a while back. I ended up just soaking the throttle linkage in WD over night and everything was normal the next day. . .

Moving on. The other day my bike got bumped somehow in a parking lot and tipped over with the bars turned left. Bent the bars a little and smashed the mirror, (got any spares?). Afterwards, my blinkers didn't work.
I stripped down the switch assembly and found a little piece that was supposed to have three wires soldered on, but they had broke. Fixed those and put it all back together and the blinkers worked great, better than ever actually. I think some of those wires had been broke for a while.

Well, I'm riding to work the other day and the left blinker stops working. Neither the front or the back light comes on and the little relay(?) that clicks on and off making the blinkers blink, clicks so fast that it sounds like a motor. . .Any idea what my problem is? The right blinker works fine, btw.

There's a short in the left turn signal wiring, possibly in the switch you just fixed or in the wiring bundle at the frame head when the wheel was slammed left.

Check the handlebar switch first because pulling the fuel tank and chasing turn signal wires throughout the frame to the lamps is a complete PITA.

If the switch is good then, with the ignition OFF, NO POWER, pull the rear left turn lamp out of its socket and check with an ohm meter to see of the center conductor is grounded. If it is, remove the seat and the fuel tank and start pulling the wiring harness connectors apart until the short goes away, then find the short in the part of the harness you isolated.

    Happy hunting.

    Regards,

Well, I decided to try the recently repaired switch first since it seemed most likely. Turns out when I put everything back together the wires were too tight and were shorting out through torn insulation. Got it all back together and it's working fine. . .ish. Problem I have now is that while trying to solder those three wires onto that little black piece in 40 degree weather with a nasty wind chill I ended up applying a little to much heat and distorted and then cracked the piece. So does anyone know where I can find one? I can't find a single assembly on ebay right now so who knows. But for now at least I can ride.

Send a PM to forum member Andreas Weiss. He breaks XS11s for sale so he may have the part and he's a better dealer than eBay.
