  • Another XJ TCI question.

I carry an extra TCI with me on trips. I usually store it in my magnetic tank bag. This puts it right up against magnets, so I was wondering if that may mess up anything over time inside there? I know some electronics and magnets don't play well together. It hasn't hurt them yet, but that may mean I've just been lucky so far.

    Thoughts?

    magnets

I never thought about the magnets in my tank bag effecting it, but then, I carry mine in a fairing pocket!

      Hey Tod,

Took me a little while to find out something about this on the "NET", but here's what I found! The timing curves are stored in an EPROM chip...Eraseable Programmed Read Only Memory! They were invented around 1971, plenty of time to be developed for use in the TCI!

An EPROM, or erasable programmable read only memory, is a type of memory chip that retains its data when its power supply is switched off. In other words, it is non-volatile. It is an array of floating-gate transistors individually programmed by an electronic device that supplies higher voltages than those normally used in digital circuits. Once programmed, an EPROM can be erased only by exposing it to strong ultraviolet light. That UV light usually has a wavelength of 253.7nm (for optimum erasure time) and belongs to the UVC range of UV light. EPROMs are easily recognizable by the transparent fused quartz window in the top of the package, through which the silicon chip is visible, and which permits exposure to UV light during erasing.
So...I don't think the magnets in your tank bag have enough strength to cause/generate an electrical current (by moving closer or farther away from the magnets) in the EPROM high enough to cause erasure of the stored data!

So...I say, it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Ask Randy...He would know if the magnets can affect them.
I carry my extra one too...wrapped in bubble wrap and gaff taped in my fairing. Especially now that I relocated it so I can have my comfy 79 seat on my 80 XS.

No, magnets won't hurt it. I carry a spare too. I'm good but I'm not stupid I have mine ty-wrapped on top of the original just in case so it'll be a simple plug swap and I'm running again. Also, I can't forget to pack it for a trip! With the E,F,G there is enough room for the two piggy-backed under the tailpiece, but for the Specials - ?
