When i put my SG away last year i read that starting the bike up and idling it will not charge the battery because it has to run over 2500 to charge it-or something around that rpm, so i took my battery tender and put it away.I started the bike up every 2 weeks and have had no problems with it starting.I took it out 2 weeks ago to get gas and am looking forward to riding it more this year.My Wal-Mart battery i got last year is still holding up.

It won't be FULLY charging until you reach that rpm range, but it will still charge somewhere in the vicinity of 11.5 volts or something, which is above the 10.8 (Or something like that) that the coils need to fire. So you may have enough in there to start it, but it might not be at the optimum 12.3~12.4 volts.
I think a battery tender would still be the best option for you to keep the battery at the optimum level, but the method you used this year where you start it periodically, is going to be much better on the seals, carbs, and other things by running oil/gas through them a bit.
Something else you might want to consider in the future, is getting one of Geezer's Regulator/Rectifier units. It starts charging MUCH earlier than the stock one and is at full charge by @ 1800 rpm... not a lot more than idle.
Just a suggestion.
