  • Which XJ1100 exhaust sounds better-stock or Mac 4 to 1?

I'm wanting a better sound to my XJ1100--currently have stock exhaust that is a bit too quiet and has a few dents and scrapes that I want to look better. Sound off on suggestions and preferences for aftermarket changes available that might produce a better sound.

IMHO The MAC exhaust is crap! Albeit the only aftermarket manufacturer still making an exhaust for our bikes....While the MAC's sound might be louder than the stock pipes...it still is not all that great...There are a few threads here dealing with a combination of different manufactures to get an end result that will be appreciated. I have read of several XSives going with Mac headers and a Supertrapp exhaust can(muffler). The Supertrapp has internal baffles that one can add or remove to tune the bike and the sound. Also MAC headers are thin walled (read cheap) and thus they will discolor in a very short time.
So your choices of aftermarket systems is really quite limited...At one time Kerker,Jardine and a few others that escape me were available but no more. Here is the most recent thread dealing with this topic... read it thoroughly

I've got a Kerker on mine, and I get constant comments about how nice it sounds.

I highly recommend one if you can find one.

The Mac 4-1 header isn't that bad once you paint it black and run over a few speed bumps and dent in #3 pipe on the bottom.

If your running the stock pipes,
4 - 2 with a cross over pipe, as far as performance
is concerned, there the best exhausts for our bikes,
if you want it louder, u could drill holes at the end of the mufflers
as some have done on here.

I would say stock is best, the Jardine cross over 4 to 2 sounds bad*ss, 4 to 1 I like a kerker or supertrapp.

I think it all depends on which "tires" you are running with!

                IMHO,
After trying some aftermarket 'crap'.... then scoring a stock XJ complete exhaust system again... I was grateful to go back to stock!
Love the sound as well. But then, I'm not into really loud pipes...
Stock XJ mufflers just have that deep bass note I like...
PLUS, there's a whole lot of other little details that I soon found were important, once they were gone. Glad I was lucky enough to get 'em back!

If you have a decent stock setup.... ya oughta hang on to it. They're getting harder to come by every day.
Dings and scrapes just give it some 'character'...
If you decide to chunk the stockers, let me know... I'll take 'em off your hands for ya.

                    Hi max,
OTOH, being thin (or perhaps just single) walled, MAC headers weigh less.
And us old farts reckon that blue at the first bend is the color pipes aught to be.
Supertrapps on their ends instead of MAC's own mufflers should let you tune the sound to just how you like it.
