  • No 1st gear or neutral?

I helped a guy I know get an LG last fall so since I headed him toward this bike I feel sorta responsable.

He said he was riding the other day and pulled up to a stoplight normally (he rides VERY conservatively) and the thing wouldn't shift down to 1st.

He said all the other gears work fine but he can't get 1st or neutral anymore.

    Any ideas?

      Hey Greg,

Is he waiting till he stops before he tries to shift DOWN?

Oh wait, that won't matter as much as what is probably the problem is the Shift LEver RETURN spring. IT gets weak, and then after you shift down, it doesn't have the strength to fully lift the lever back UP to reset the shift pawl to grab the next dowel on the shift drum, so it won't downshift.

Have him try to gently lift up on the shifter just enough to have it reset the pawl, not enough to UPSHIFT back into 2nd., and then try to downshift, and he should be able to then downshift!

IF he's able to downshift after resetting the lever, then he needs to replace the spring! There's some nice photos in the tech tips by Ken Talbot that shows this part and such!!

I told him he probably has a bent/broken pin on the shift cam. If he can downshift into the other gears just fine, it doesn't seem to me it would be the spring, but that's easy enough to check while he's under that cover.

          Thanks for the replies y'all.

We'll pull the cover and see what's up.

trbig seems pretty certain it's a pin in the shift drum. Since I understand he's broken almost every part on one of these things at one time or another I think that is where I'll start.

Kevin is signed up on ch11 as 3 feathersokie but he says he is computer challenged (like I'm not!) and won't jump in.

Ahhhh...don't think we need another okie anyway.

Yeah. I had the same issue when I first got my bike, except I couldn't get into 5th. It ended up being a broken retaining tab, and I found both the broken tab and the missing pin in the oil pan when I did the 2nd gear fix.
