Just figured I'd start a new thread since a lot of people seem to back away from this mod after reading that they have to split the cases in order to install a kick starter on an '80+ engine. I should point out that they may have built some engines with the necessary parts already installed, and some without them. However, I'm confident that nobody added the internal parts to my '80 SG Midnight Special without installing the intermediate and lever shafts as well, so if you have the same bike you're probably in the clear. It's very easy to tell whether or not you can do it though; just remove the engine/clutch cover, remove the clutch, and remove the 3 #16 bolts holding part #15 in (see microfiche below). If you see parts 9-12 in there already, all you need to do is get a hold of the rest of the parts and put them in.
There are 2 potential issues to look out for as you install:
1) metal clip 14 attaches to ratchet/hub 13 and fits into part 15. because 13 has to rotate on the shaft as you push it on, clip 14 can become misaligned with part 15, which causes the ratchet to be constantly engaged.
2) Remember to wind the spring up 180 degrees before you push the lever shaft completely into the transmission case.
Cheers,
Marshall
