    does anyone know if any modern wire wheels will bolt up to a stock 78/79 xs1100 shaft?

    Hi Chris and welcome,
    use the search function to find a string about that. Briefly, the extremely rare and appallingly expensive wire wheels from a certain Japan-only bike will fit right on.
    Otherwise, a wire wheel from an XS650 will fit right on the front but you will need to machine an XS11 cast rear and weld on two spoke rings to lace on the XS650's rear rim.
    There's options here, the earlier XS650s use deep groove aluminum rims and have an 18" rear while later models have chromed steel rims and a 16" rear.
    Or you could go for the swirly-girly cast wheels off an XJ11 that seemingly plug right on.

      It may be just as easy to have a new spoke-type hub machined from scratch for the rear, but in any case, this isn't a low-buck deal. You'll also probably need a set of custom-length spokes.
