  • XJ1100 - My Project

    Here's the story:

My father-in-law bought his XJ1100J new in '82. He put around 30k miles on it over 5 or so years. At some point the crank broke in half while he was riding and was able to made a short drive home on 2 cylinders. At the time, the bike was pretty much totaled.

He gave the bike to me a couple of years ago as a project or to part out. I'd rather get it back together so I can move up to a bigger bike from my XJ650 and to give him a chance to be able to ride it again, not to mention so I can get some experience.

I've been working on it every couple of weeks for a while with an experienced mechanic that a buddy of mine hooked me up with.

The wiring is going to be a pain in the ass. I have the frame sitting out at a friend's where their dogs had some fun and ripped out a lot of the wiring. I picked up a wiring harness on ebay, but man, that'll be a blast.

    Anyone have any comments/suggestions/experience?

I need a couple pairs of valves now, but hopefully something comes of Geezer's thread about a group buy on valves.

As bullet proof as these bikes are, i would wonder how the crank broke on this one with only 30000 miles on it.

who knows.. my father in law blames the shop that he had working on it..our best bert with it apart is possibly partly a lack of oil getting to that bearing...

all in all seems to be minimal damage. there was a broken link in the primary chain which your up the guide. there are plenty of cheap parts on ebay!
