All Yamahas of that era seem to have similar problems, including the 750s and 850s. Yamaha tripples had similar problems in the larger displacments, similar discussions go on in that group's web site. Early Ventures have the same problem as well, and the '2nd gear fix' is remarkably simmilar to the XS 11 fix. Yamaha eventually addressed the problem in replacment gears, and production Venturers, but not until the late '80s. I don't know of other manufacturers having problems.

      Zuki GS 1000 trans problem

      Hi,

I do recollect that back then, early 80 s the Zuki 1000 gs did have some trans problem, dont know if it was similar to the yams. IIRC, this problem was solved by the time the first 1100 Zukis came out. I do know that I was warned on my 84 Honda Magna, that the trans would not take powershifting at all into second gear, but that it would start popping out and that the cure for that was quote,,,,,undercutting gears,,,, unquote. I never had trouble with the Magna, but never powershifted either.

Maybe it was because they didn't last over 50k miles? I don't really know..I don't have any experience with them, just joking around.

That's(50k) around where the XS11's tranny problems tend to occur, and these bikes can last to 100k miles or more.

The venture was actually a problem with a washer that was used to locate the shaft side to side in the transmission. When the washer wore out the shaft could slide far enough that second gear wouldn't engage. The solution was MUCH more involved than the XS11, and the answer was a new shaft and harder washer.
