  • XJ Exhaust on an MNS

Just wanted someones opinion. I currently have a 4 into one (mac) that is only a couple yrs old. I do have a near perfect condition original 4 into 2 with the crossover pipe double walled XJ exhaust that I bought last yr off of one of our members. I would like to switch out the current 4 into 1 & try this one out this wknd. I am wondering is it possible, will it fit at all and from what I kinda got from the forum is that an orginal exhaust is far better for performance & sound than my current one. Is this true? I have original air box etc. Just wondering if its worth the effort to switch or not. Thx - Dan

Dan, is the "new" exhaust going on your 81 XS1100 LH? If so, the headers will fit. The brackets that the mufflers bolt to look the same as the xj11's and the XJCD shows that the part # are very similar. Should fit.

If it turns out you prefer your Mac exhaust I would be interested it acquiring the xj11 exhaust.

      Hi Dan,
No, its not likely that a like new exhaust will fit on that bike. I will give you twenty bux plus shipping for that useless thing you have there, haha.

Hey David: Thx for the reply - yeah its my 81LH - Just wanted to know if it would fit b4 I tear the other one off. I'm either gonna love the Chrome headers etc & the black together or not. I'll have to check it out. Now if someone would state any performance wise stuff compared to the 4 to 1 would be awesome. Oh, I don't know if I'd sell it or not, these are really hard to find especially in its condition - It was changed out a few wks after the bike was bought new then hung on a hook for the remainder of its years. If I do thu I'll try to let you know - Dan

The XJ exhaust is a bit different than the stock XS 11 LH. The head pipes will probably fit OK, the muffler hangers are different - closer to the driver's footpegs - than either Standards or Specials. Another factor is that the XJ pipes angle up, and the XJ hanger is higher than other rear footpeg (rear set) muffler mounts. The result is that on your XS the XJ mufflers may be at a different angle, which may cause you problems at the header-muffler joint; this angle won't be the same as it is on the XS. You may have problems with exhaust leaking at that joint.

In any case, the muflers are not a bolt-on-and-go conversion; you will probably end up with some extra bits and pieces to connect the XS mount to the XJ mufflers.

Hey Jerry: Thx a million for that answer. I kinda checked it out from the side the other night & it seemed what you are exactly talking about. But now I know. I think I'll keep the system for the headers than, as you stated its a clean fit. & if I change it out I'll have to have to get another set of muffs that are not as big in the round as the originals so they would be lower on the bike & maybe even hang with a muff clamp. What a great site - you saved me a pile of work - instead of doing that this wknd I may have a ride if the weather holds out. Ice fishin' & ridin' a bike - only happens for a few wks a year - yee haw - Dan

              Hi Dan,
what I hear is that a MAC 4-1 is OK to put on if you ain't got nothin' else and at least it fits.
OTOH, the stock system sounds nicer and works better in the all-important mid-range.
              BUT
The XJ system will not plug right on to an XS, you gotta fight with it.
Whether the victory is worth the battle is for you to decide.

Hey Fred: Yeah the performance would be bonus & thats what I guessed it might be. Now that I know, with the reality of it, the MAC fits & now this would be a botched job & probably look like crap & maybe leak. But man alive those chrome double walled headers would look soo good & I am sure the sound would be awesome. I guess I'll hang it back up, & stare at it for awhile & turn over the idea of maybe using smaller muffs one day. - Dan
