  • 2nd cylinder not firing

Hi. I recently took off my carbs to clean, repaint and hopefully make a performance improvement. Nothing was wrong with the performance before except it maybe ran a bit on the lean side. I finished the project and started the bike, it's running rough and the 2nd cylinder is not firing. It seems to clear up at higher RPM I'm assuming due to the jetting. I pulled the plug and checked it, it's good. It has great compression. I took out the pilot screws to make sure I got everything clean. The book says if the pilot screws are disturbed to reset them at 1 1/4 turns out. I know I need to sync but to not get any gas at all in low RPM is odd. My question is, is there a particular passage that could be plugged? Or is it common for the 2nd carb to have a pilot screw setting much different than the other 3 due to being the vacuum source as well?

Hey Jeepster, i had the same problem with mine when i got it. The carbs had been gone through, and it ran great above about 2000. Got good mileage as well. What i found when i adjusted the carbs, is that number 2 was set only at a quarter out. After readjusting, and synching the problem was gone. Don't rule out the synch as being the problem though.

did you check and adjust your floats?

I don't think its common for #2 to be different from the other three but it is common for each cylinder to be a bit different. When mine runs its best there is about 1/2 turn difference between my "tightest" idle screw and my "loosest" idle screw.

My recommendation and i'm sure others will put in their 2 cents is that you should spend the time to balance your carbs and read the tech tip on how to adjust the idle screw. 1 1/4 turns is just a rough starting point, from there you need to tune each carb to get the best results.

I usually adjust idle screws -> balance carbs -> adjust idle screws -> check balance again and adjust if needed -> go for a ride!

Thanks guys, the conformation helps. I think I'll go ahead and do a float level adjustment instead of just measuring the floats. It really helped on my dirtbike. Then I'm going to make a vacuum tube sync tool since I already have the gauge. I kind of figured the pilot screws were to blame. There's no way the carb bodies and compression and all that could be identical. I'm just a little impatient cause I've had to remove them 3 times already, and my paint got all messed up from messing with them.

          Pilot Jets

If all else fails, look for a loose pilot jet.I've seen this happen on more than one occasion.

Sounds like a pilot jet to me. The main jets kick in at 2k-2500 rpm. Anything under that and the pilot jets are doing the work.

If it makes any difference, my mixture screws are all at 4+ turns out. 1.25, and they would be choking!

That helps. Well, I resprayed the carbs today, I'm gonna let em cure real good before messing with them again. I love my midnight but the black theme sure can be a pain. This time around I'll sync them much better.
