  • Plastic/metal front fender

I have a 78 XS1100 and the front chrome fender is pretty beat. Wondering if there is an aftermarket plastic or metal fender that I could paint that will fit. Anyone know??

    Yes, there are some...

but the one that some PO put on my bike is UGLY:

Also, you may find an original in decent condition on Ebay, just do a search "xs1100 front fender". I saw some there the other day, but decided to focus on other things before cosmetics.

      replacement fender

Mike's XS has a fender that fits perfectly on the XS1100 standard. It won't work on the Special.

Awesome - thanks. I went to the site and am wondering if those tank badges fit the 1100?

          XS650 badges on XS1100

The XS650 tank badges WILL NOT fit. The XS1100 badges are considerably larger. Even if you install them with emblem tape, they will be small enough to look silly.

You can get several of the proper badges here. Not all of them, but most of them are available.

              Something to think about...

In addition to keeping stuff from splashing on you, the metal front fender also provides some front end support. The front ends on these things are pretty weak to begin with, and changing from metal to plastic probably makes it even weaker. You might want to think about a fork brace to provide the needed stiffness. JAT
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

If you're considering painting is there a compelling reason not to prep the one you have and paint it? The chrome can be bead blasted down and painted over.

The fenders on Mikesxs site are metal and claim to be very rigid. Maybe plastic was a bad idea. My current fender has quite a few dents and would take a lot of work to get back in shape. I have to locate the paint code from the PO to see what was used. The paint job was very good on the side panels and seat panels - unfortunately he went a little paint crazy on the tank and there are some noticeable runs.

yeah .. dent's will do it. I don't blame you I think I'd rather spend the cash than work on dents too.

Marty, how much of a difference is there? I was eying those 'vintage' black/silver oval badges at MikesXS (for a 'different' look) and they have the offset screw holes like my '78, but there's no dimensions. Do the screw holes line up, or are they just too small everywhere?

                        Depends how fussy you are.

                        Hi Marty,
these gas tank badges are from MikesXS:-

The badges are smaller than the originals and you do have to re-tap the holding bar to attach them but they do look OK from a yard away.

                          Hi Trumpet,
but you must admit it works great to keep the rain off.
Perhaps if it (and that nasty brown fairing) were painted to match the bike's gas tank & side-panels it would look a lot better.

The screw holes won't line up. The XS650 has a 3 gallon tank. Your main concern is covering the mount bar. Have a look at these:Badge Replicas

Surely, someone who deals in these can give you dimensions. Old Bike Barn and REPRODUCTIONDECALS deal in the Aussie badges. Perhaps you can get a response from Mike's about dimensions?

As I've only had it for a month now, I haven't had occasion to ride it in the rain because it is really cold here when it rains lately, when it's not snowing!

The fairing used to match the rest of the bike, but yes, it is horrifically ugly.
