  • Pulsar Coil Assembly

    Just bought a new Pulsar Coil Assembly from Yamaha (Got tired of dealing with an intermittent spark!!)....has anyone replaced one of these???
    I'm not sure if I have to remove the timing mark plate and..
    Is there a measurement (clearance) for the pick up coils?

    Red Baron posted this a while back. Measure your current setup before disassembly just in case yours is different.

    Curious, how much did you pay for them, and what is the part number? A friend of mine is in need of set.

      With tax it was $95.35...
      The part # for mine..(LG) was 2H7-81676-10.
      I got the part number from Bike bandit so you should be able to find others in case they're different.
      Do I need to take the timing mark cover off?....having a nasty time with the allen bolt..

        Thanks for the information. Just one more question: the part number came from Bike Bandit, but was the part genuine Yamaha, or aftermarket?

        As for the timing plate, I am pretty sure you have to take it off. Never tried WITHOUT taking it off so can't be 100% on that. Try putting it in gear and have someone hold the rear brake on while you are trying to loosen it. Or, pick up an impact driver. Should be available at most auto stores or places that sell tools. Think they are 1/2" drive. Get the proper allen adaptor and that should
        loosen it.

          That's the Yamaha part number...
          By the way in case you didn't know it comes with the sensors and the wiring harness.....nice!

            Success!.......Thanks for the impact driver tip...found a 6mm adapter at sears..and a couple wacks later + a breaker bar and it was off.
            Adjusted the new coils to .02 and it started right up...even without choke! :

              You're welcome. Don't loose track of that tool... I can assure you that it will come in VERY handy as you go about maintaining your XS, or any other piece of machinery for that matter.

                Impact driver

                I agree - one of the most useful tools in the box........

                Once you get one you'll wonder why you struggled so much before.

                Top - tip from a friend. Partially compress the spring loading by hand (brute force - but don't push the bike over) - before hitting the end with a hammer. One of the few tools where - 'get a bigger hammer' - actually works rather trashing expensive parts.

                Right - that's enough slightly off-topic tool talk from me!

                  Tom,

                  I replaced the same unit for the same reason a couple of yrs ago. It wasn't too difficult. I just took out the screws that holds the pick-ups and wires inside the cover then followed the wires under the bike up the right side cover and under the seat. The most difficult part for me was one little tiny screw which holds a little clip to hold the wires under the engine. I was having a hard time getting my old eyes to focus while lying on my back with my head on the floor. Other than that it's a simple and hopefully another 20 yrs before you need to worry about it again.

                    Yeap...Had the same problem with that little screw.
                    Ended up putting the screw in first then pushing the wire clip onto it....whew.
                    Also, Yamaha must have redesigned the wires to the upper coil.
                    They're alot longer and those two wires have an insulated cover.
                    I played with the angle on the clips that hold the wires and routed them for the least amount of movement. I'll pull the cover in a couple hundred miles to see if there's any marks on the wires.
                    Don't want the insulation to wear off again!!!!!

                      Don't really mean to undead this post but...after 8k miles...still perfect. Don't know if Yamaha stills sells the PU coils...but would recommend getting a new set if they still do. The newer design works like a champ!

                          Just a word of caution. I replaced mine with a set from bike bandit also. After about 1500 miles it went completely dead. No spark. After checking out all the old stuff I looked at the new pickup coils. One wire had come lose from where the wiring harness conects to the "bendy" wires that go to the pick ups . Several hours of clever diagonostic work wasted.

                            For the record the one I bought was a genuine Yamaha part. They redesigned it a bit and works very well.
