  • Alright, I found the shocks I wanted....

Now I have to change out the set on the bike for the ones I have in hand. First attempt at doing this so...so, if any of you experienced folks have some tips to make my job easier and to make sure I don't screw up something because of a lack of knowledge...help a brother out!

I wish I was home. I'd come over and give you a hand! My daughter lives in Athens. IIRC, just put the bike on the center stand and do one side at a time.

    I need new shocks myself.

        Gravity Never Rests...

        1sttimeXSowner,

Good question! After doing this a few times it's easy to forget what it was like the first time through.

Seems so obvious that some people may overlook it but:

Put the bike on the centerstand first. This allows the rear suspension arm to drop and permit the shock springs to extend fully. The shock springs are no longer compressed/loaded and therefore when you pull them off they won't release/expand with FORCE when you pull them away from the mounts.

If the new ones are a different length than the old ones then it also helps to place some type of blocking under the rear wheel/tire so when there's no shocks at all the swingarm won't drop down too far. Gotta pick it back up to install the new shocks.....

Also if the original shocks are AIR shocks then be sure to remove the valve stem of the air input to be sure that they aren't pressurized.

Can you imagine what would happen if someone removed the shocks while the weight of the bike was on the rear swingarm: That's a Hallmark Photo f'sure!

          Where?

Dahlonega is 30 minutes on the other side of Gainesville from you. US19 goes through. I travel full time and I'm presently in Irving, TX. I don't expect to get home until 12 or 13 March. I hope your shocks are replaced by then!

            My SG came from Gainsville.

If your in Irving you are very near Wildcat,Montreux Blue, and jmnjrpa and some others.

Look 'em up and make 'em feed ya.

Got me confused with the shock thing, that wasn't me. But I do need shocks.

MoM rally in Hurst in April, maybe you can drag your stay out a little. LOL
