  • Yeah, cold thick oil will cause it, less cranking amps from a cold or weak battery also. I wouldn't worry about it unless you have to hit the button half a dozen times every time you try to start it. To get to the starter clutch to rebuild.. you have to pull the motor and split the cases.

My starter has been doing that for about 21 years that I know of. Because you DO have to split the case to repair it is the reason it is STILL doing the spin dance! When it finally dies, THEN I'll fix it.

Kind of like the backlash in the diff on my pickup. It has had a TON of lash since I have owned this pickup (15 years or so on a 1981 Ford F100). I just KNEW that the ring and pinion on had a short time to live because of how bad the lash was. 15 years later, I am STILL waiting on it to die.

      • Clint,

Get yourself a kickstart lever off an XS850 and you'll never have to split the cases. Well, never IS a long time

I assume the XS860 lever folds? I have the original "emergency" level and have had to use it on a couple of occasions as well. I'm just hoping I get another 21 years out of this starter clutch then I KNOW I won't have to worry about it!

          • The Plot Thickens

"The Partridge Family was neither a bird or a family...please discuss at will "

It was just good wholesome entertainment coming to us free via the idiot box. Not much in the way of plot but I'd tune in just to see what shenanigans Susan Dey was up to.

BTW, Mrs Partridge would have never approved if Keith got involved with motorcycles or flat track racing in any form. Not that the writers of the show weren't aware of the sport or could have added a bike trailer to the back of the bus. Just that the networks didn't see that type of thing as palatable for consumption by the general public. Too adventurous for those days: had to consider the heart-rate of John Q. Public.

Might have really spiked the ratings if Keith had to race that afternoon and then make it just in the nick of time to appear on stage for the "C'Mon-Get-Happy" opener. And what if he sprained his wrist in a race? Would he be able to play the guitar or hold a microphone?? Far too much for the general audience of that period to handle comfortably/safely.

No. No. No. Flat Trackers and Bubble Gum Pop just don't go together.

Speaking of Susan Dey (who made me drool back in the day) I remember seeing what I believe may have been her one and only movie. It was called "endless love" and she had several nude scenes in it. However, I was rather disappointed in how poor the plot was (even though it was worth the ticket price just for the nude scenes).

For the record, I do not recall clearly seeing that movie or paying for a ticket.

Unofficially, it was well worth it to get into an R-rated movie at that tender age and plot/schmott: It was SUSAN DEY with no top.

That's all that mattered at the time.
