  • Effing thing!!!!

Other than a stuck throttle cable, what would cause my engine to race after start up in neutral?

    The usual suspects

    Idle screw set too high
    Carbs way out of synch
Intake boot clamp interfering with throttle linkage

When I bought it, all was good. Then it would not turn over; got new sparkplugs. Now it is a one touch fire then revs way up beore I kill it.

Is the choke pulled? With the choke lever pulled out, mine will rev up to over 3K in about 60 seconds after startup at 30ºF (faster if the temps are warmer). Once the choke is pushed back in, everything settles down again.

No choke and the reving is immediate.

That sounds like the throtle cable is stuck. Follow it down to the carbs and watch it go up and down when you twist the grip. Does is snap back all the way down? Is the end of the cable sleeve held properly in the support bracket?

Try playing with the throttle without starting the bike. Make sure it's moving freely, and snapping back to where it should be.

You might check your vacuum advance while you're at it and make sure it's connected to the tap on the carb body, not the one on the carb boot. JAT

Cable moves smooth and freely. I will check the sleeve, What if it is not right? Is there a quick fix for that other than canibalizing my good bike for the part? That bike is down for a carb rebuild. My rough bike is the one running (sort of) and I want to ride......good weather right now.

Does the cable snap back when you release the throttle?

Take the tank off, and watch the motion of the end of the cable, where it's connected to the carbs. Make sure it's going all the way back down (quickly) when you release the throttle. With the tank off, you can easily see the entire path of the cable and sleeve, and you can determine if it's getting kinked or of it's caught on something.

Of course, you don't HAVE TO take the tank off to see that stuff, but it's easier that way, IMO.

Disconnect the throttle cable and see if it still revs. If it does, at least you know it is probably in the linkage at the carbs, or ?????

1200 rpm, sometimes you can find that info on a data decal inside one of the side covers.

                              xs1100 racing engine at startup

Hello, yea i have the same type of problem except mine starts up and idles somewhat normally and when i rev it up to about 3000 rpm's it wants to continue up to 5-6k on it's own . I suspect that only a total rebuild of the carbs is going to fix it, in addition to syncing and other adjustments. When i ride out on the highway it acts almost like a cruise control ,the excelleration takes the bike up to highway speeds , it becomes a problem though when i want to exit the highway and the engine is still doing 5-6k , naturally i can't put it in a lower gear at such high revs or i could damage the lower gears! I posted this problem a while ago and everyone suggested syncing and carb rebuilds. I took the carbs off the bike cleaned them a bit and generally looked them over, took the bowls off and cleaned them , sprayed carb cleaner throughout in hopes of fixing it , but when i reinstalled the problem returned but not as harsh so i did something right , now when i rev up to 3k it doesn't always accelerate, just half the time now . I did use instant gasketmaker sealing the carbs though so i may have reduced a vacuum leak.
