The 80 special that i have has the famous xs crack down near where the two pipes come together near the foot peg, the crack is on the left exhaust and goes all the way around the pipe thus separating the pipe it makes it a little loud and carbon shows up on the pipe immediatley after it, i am going to get it welded up, but for the moment i suspect that the imbalance between the left and right vacuum is responsible for the way it is currently running , i mean after all the right side pipe is fine and runs great and has normal vacuum , but the left side where my timing vacuum hose is hooked up has weaker vacumm and more questionable vaccum due to exhaust not making it to the end of the exhaust muffler . So half my engine is running different than the other half! Does anyone have input regarding this situation and suggestions and or experiences. Thanks

Mine cracked like that too, but all I noticed was extra sound from the leaky area. A quick stop at a local welding shop, and they had me fixed up in no time. Mine wasn't all the way around, so they were even able to do it with the pipes still on the bike. Cost me $20 for the weld.1980 XS850SG - Sold

mine cracked all round, both sides. I botched them back together with exhaust patching tape, sheetmetal wrap and hose clamps because that can be done without having to take the exhaust off to weld it.
If ever I get around to doing a proper fix I will think about replacing the welded on stock mufflers with aftermarket slip-ons.Fred Hill, S'toon
