  • New 1984 xj1100 rebuild-Looking for advice.

I have just picked up a 1984 xj1100. The engine was in pieces but the rest of the bike is in pretty good shape. What I want to do is boost performance but I don't want to spend large quantities of cash.

So all you wise wizards of the wrench, teachers of torque, and preachers of horsepower feel free to help. What can I do while or prior to reassembly to help improve performance.

How much cash do you have to throw at it?

The most popular item is an 1196 kit form Wiseco. Not sure if that falls out of the budget, but it will give the most bang. Other than that, maybe, just maybe, port the intake to match the intake boots.

Beyond that, freshen up the heads with valve lapping and new seals ect. Maybe new valve springs if any are close on specs.

Do a search and there is soem good info on which year head and cams with what year jugs give the best compression and performance.

Hey there Dave! Welcome to the forum! To clarify one thing, there was only one year of production of the XJ1100, and that was '82. There is no such thing as an '84 XJ1100.

C-Bug, they actually continued to make the XJ in Canada through 84. So it could be a C'nuk 84.

You could spend a ton of money on boring the motor and such and maybe get another 10hp for all your effort. The best option for power is going to be a turbo, but then that part about "I don't want to spend large quantities of cash." kind of negates that.

These bikes are good strong runners, but they are 30 year old technology. Even with the best, most expensive upgrades, you'll barely get into the H/P range of a modern 600cc bike and you'll still be double their weight.

                Hi Dave and welcome,
just build the engine back together so it runs nice.
Though not quite as powerful as the XS11, the XJ11 still runs out of brakes and handling way before it runs out of power.

                  Yes I am a Canuck

Wow, why is it I always love the weird bikes. Ya I am from Canada, eh...

So from responses on this forum and other forums I think I will just rebuild this bike as stock.

However, I am in dire need of a complete Carburator Rebuild Kit. I am having a hard time finding them.

Any ideas where I can go for parts.

                  Thanks

This is one kit that will work, assuming the carbs on yours didn't change after '82. There is also a seller on ebay named Georgefix that sells carb kits for these bikes, and is very good to work with. I'm not sure if his kits include the mixture screws though.
