  • replacement oil filter

Gents, got a question., If I go to Napa, Auto Zone, etc, what oil filter do I need to buy for my '82 xj1100j?

    autozone SP2

    Napa 4933

    STP: SMO-2

    Wix 24933

    Fram CH6002

**Make sure it has BOTH rubber O-rings in the kit, one for the chamber, the small one for the filter bolt!**

I havent tried any of these, just something I saved from another thread.

NAPA and Wix are probably the same filter (Wix makes most of NAPAs), the STP is supposed to be a decent filter, the Autozone I don't know, and the Fram should be avoided.

I've seen various filter comparisons (generally car filters) and Fram always comes in at or near the bottom. NAPA, Wix, and Motorcraft were usually the top three.

For any Sportster owners out there, the FL-1A Motorcraft (or equivilent) will screw on in place of the sometimes hard-to-find HD filter, for 1/2 the cost, more filter area, and added oil capacity. Plus you can find these anywhere...

        YMMV

          Purolator Pure One

The Purolator Pure One, is by far the best filter on the market. Filter capacity, design, material tolerances are the best!

Have you tried to get one lately? Fram quit making that filter. I bought up all they had in the OKC warehouse last year. The only filter I can find locally to fit is the WIX filter, which contrary to some's thoughts, I have seen tests that agree with Steve saying they are always one of the best. They are about double the price of Fram though.

Having been in the automotive parts business for 30 years, i will say that Wix (Napa) is one of the best out there. I don't know if Hastings makes one for it, but it would also be good. The other filter that would be very good is Amsoil. I'll have to croos some numbers and come up with a few more brands.

Another plus for me, is Wix is American made. It bothers me every time I go to put on one of these last few Frams I have that it has "Made in China" printed on it.
