  • The case of the curious crack

In all my years of working on carburetors I have never seen a cracked needle jet. Until today. While working on a moderately ugly set of carbs off my friends XJ1100J, I pulled the needle jet out of one of the carbs and under the gunge it looked like it was cracked. I set it aside and completed the teardown. Then I picked it back up and cleaned it off. Sure enough, it was cracked starting at one of the small holes, then spiraling up through a large hole and continuing upward. Like a candy cane.

Now my question is, does anybody have one (marked x-7) they would part with? I checked MikesXS and he doesn't list this version. Any other source for a new part? All help would be greatly appreciated!

I may be wrong on this, but I thought the XJ used the same carbs as the later year XS's. If that's true, Mikesxs does sell them. It's Part #48-0660. According to the parts fische, the XJ does use the same part as the '81 XS MNS.

I checked the Yamaha parts catalog and the XS650 part number is different from the XJ1100 part number. I know they will physically interchange but will not perform the same due to the different size/number/location of the holes in the side.

You might try contacting georgefix on ebay. He sells a lot of this kind of stuff and might be able to help.

When I first got my bike, I found one that was broken completely in half about a 1/4" up from the bottom.

Well then, I guess it's not all that unusual. Must be vibration along with heating and cooling over a period of time. I'm hoping someone here has one in a parts carb, and will part with it. I am going to contact georgefix, but after reveiwing what he sells on ebay, it doesn't look like he deals in those parts. I did look at other sites that sell Mikuni brass but no one had that model. Appearantly it is a "300" series.

Can anyone out there help me???

              Ken.
Send georgefix an email through ebay. IF he can get or find the parts, he will help. If he can't find the parts, he will let you know, and NOT try to sell you something that does not work. That is the reason so many of us here like to deal with him.

Thanks for the info. I have sent email to both. Until I find one, any further help is appreciated.

I have some used if they are the same as the rest of the 80's carbs.

                      Credit where due!!

A couple of weeks ago I was trying to locate a needle jet for a BS34 (curious crack). Thank you to those that suggested Georgefix and motorcyclecarbs. However, I emailed both and for whatever reason I have yet to receive a response.
But a member came through and I now have the part I need to complete the carb overhaul. THANK YOU 81xsproject!!
I want to echo the sentiments of many by saying the knowledge available at xs11.com is priceless and the willingness to share thoughts and experience is without comparison. Thank you all.
