I am getting ready to put an XJ tank on my XS, and woudl like to see how the XJ's rear hold down works. The slot is much wider than the little hole that the XS has, and I may have to figure out something for vibration isolation. SO, seeing how Yamaha did it might help get the ideas flowing.

The XJ has a rubber strap that fits around a post. Inside this post is a threaded hole that a washer headed bolt goes down onto the tank and locks it in place.. Only.. I've never put a bolt on mine. The seat holds it down pretty good by itself. You can see the salt marks on the tank how far up the seat sits on it... I've been riding it in the sand/salted wet roads.
I've never taken this strap off... looks like some sanding and paint is needed..
I remember something about when TC put his XJ tank on, he cut the back side of the tank off along these red lines...
But... anything you might need from an XJ to make it work.. including if you want me to cut that whole cross member off an old frame and send to you.. Just let me know.

That washer Tod mentioned is a LARGE oval, slightly bigger than the hole... bolt goes down through the middle.
There are 2 large, black plastic, round knobs the front of the tank forks over.'82 XJ1100J Maxim (has been sold.)

I could get him pics of that too from another bike.. but it's out in my shop and it's too cold out there right now. lol. He's just lucky this bike is out in the garage.. or he may have to wait until spring for the pics.

From what I can tell, the front mounts the same. If there is a large difference in distance from the rear mount, that may be a problem, but I was thinking of making a piece of aluminum to fit the slot, which would hold the XS dampener in it, but I think the slot on the XJ tank is too narrow, hence TC cutting it.
But thanks for the pics, gives me an idea or two. I may just find the rubber isolator and make a plate to cover it that will use the XS post with a few washers.

Is your xs a standard or special, if it matters Im not sure . I have loose tanks of both so thoses I can compare. My XJ project bike is at another location but I have the tank here (been derusting it) and its in my garage full of gas on an xj trashed frame. I will make some measurements and get back to you later. A few days ago I did lay a special tank on the xj frame and do recall the rear mount was a few inches further forward than the xj mount. Was thinking of doing what you are for my special and that convinced me I wasn't up to all the trouble anytime soon.79SF

Frame is an 80L. If today is warm enough, I will take a look at it this afternoon after work.

That is not a bad idea. If the original post will go through the slot, machining a blank to fit the slot, and covering it in plastidip would probably be ideal.
My biggest obstacle now will be if the rear mount is of by inches like SF suggested.
I just like the looks of the XJ tank, and the extra capacity.
Anyone know off hand what the resistance values for the fuel sender are on the XJ tank? I may be able to pick up a fuel gauge on the way home if I can find one with the right resistance values.Ich habe dich nicht gefragt.

Hey Ivan,
You may have found out by now, but the XJ's tank is LONGER, and the XJ's slot will NOT line up with the XS's frame OEM mount post. I had to actually CUT that post down so that it would not rub into the bottom of the XJ tank!
The front rubber mounts fit the same, but the tank is larger and sticks out more foreward than the OEM, and so there's more of a chance of hitting the tank with the fork tubes when they are turned to the stops!
The front tang on the seat is what fits into that slot that I cut out of the tank. I don't have it bolted down in the back, just like TOD, the seat secures it well enough! I had to bend the tangs for my side covers a little to allow room for them to fit just behind and below the XJ's tank end/tail.
I have a Special, just swapped those petcocks onto the XJ, it didn't come with any! I also put my fuel sensor from my special onto the XJ, it's on the opposite side, had to route the wires a little differently to get it to plug into the harness. I can't remember if the sensor is upside down or not, but it does work enough to keep me from running on empty!

You probably know this... but just a reminder... there's also a difference in the guages. XJ uses 4 bar graphs... instead of an actual guage like on the XS.
Not sure about the resistances... but if TC was able to get his to work, they must be close enough.

I did the same on swapping my Special's tank for a Standard one.
From your post it seems the XJ & Standard tanks both keep their fuel senders on the opposite side to the Special's.
The Special's thermistor sender needs to be installed in a Standard or an XS tank with it's wires pointing forward instead of back (needs longer wires) or the sender will be upside down. With the sender mounted right side up the red light comes on just as the tank runs onto reserve. My initial wrong way up (what difference can it make?) mount had the red light come on mebbe a mile or two before the reserve sucked dry.Fred Hill, S'toon

I didn't use the XJ's sender, I swapped my XS sender into the Xj's tank so that it would work with my red eye low fuel light, no gauge on the special! The Xj tank's sender unit I had was broken anyways, but I believe it does use a float type system, so it might work on a Standard's gauge, but I'm no electrical guru when it comes to gauges and such!
