  • Swingarm Swapout

    Hey guys,
I'm wondering if there is a swing arm out there that is a little bit longer, and a straight swap out? Like T.C. I'm super tall, and the bike I'm building is going to be like squeezing into a sardine can!

I've been doing searches on the site, and will continue to, but all I've turned up so far has to do with a fat tire. I don't really need a fat tire. I just need a few extra inches.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
    Joe

Couldn't you just modify the seat so it places your butt further from the pegs? No need to change wheel placement for that.

The main problem I see, is any different swingarm will require a different length of driveline if you were wanting the shaft drive. If you're willing to swap to XSChop's chain drive unit, then the length wouldn't be critical.. it would just need more chain.

The chances of finding a driveline that would match up to the splines/gears if wanting to keep the shaft drive is probably slim to none and would require either someone to machine one and harden it from scratch, or to find someone to lengthen one... both of which are going to be pretty expensive to do correctly.

Hey Joceiphus: You can always put forward controls on the bike - that'll give you more leg room. I have the ones from TC Bros Choppers on my MNS & they fit great with the rods full length - no bending them like in the pics on the site. I even left the orginal drivers pegs on - the rods go underneath the pegs & you just cut the orginal shift & brake pegs, drill a hole to attach the rods and thats it the front attaches to wear you mount engine guards - its a custom fit - Dan

            Thanks so far Fellas!

Let me provide a little more detail.
As is the bike is lowered 11" eye to eye on the shocks.
I'm going to lower the seat rails, refab the upper shock mount,
and move the wheel back a little. I want to sit down inside the motorcycle.
I don't want to sit on top of it. If I was normal height I wouldn't need to move the wheel, but that's just part of the curse of being a big tall sexy dude.

And I will have forward controls.
I also have a rough sketch of what I'm talking about. It's not autocad or anything, but you get the general idea!

Wow! Talk about making a small problem worse! The height thing will definitley be an issue with everything (especially your butt) lowered that much.

You do plan to put the front brakes back on, right?

Like I said that's a rough sketch. I don't think it'll be lowered that much. And yes it'll have all the brakes. No suicide clutch, hardtail, spikes, knives or skulls!
I basically just need a longer swingarm that'll bolt up with as little mods as possible.

Any younger Yam swingarm will be longer I guess; V-Max, BT1100 etc... but also wider. I think the easiest way is to use a V-Max swingarm (these cost next to nothing), hacksaw the tubing up front that runs from one side to the other, take out a piece to get the same width as the XS1100 swingarm and weld it back together again.. Chances are you have to modify the XS wheel a bit, but not much. I guess. You have to check that yourself..
But why do you insist on a straight swap if you're already cutting up and rewelding your frame?

You also have to consider the position of the new shock mounts. With a longer swingarm they have to move further to the rear.

When you change the swingarm length, that changes almost everything. I've done this on another bike, and the list of needed mods was pretty long; relocated shock mounts, longer driveline (chain in my case), reworked fender mounts. The longer wheelbase will reduce manueverability too, so keep that in mind.

I'll probably have to do most of those things anyway.
