  • How to: Trim on Vetter

Ok how does one go about getting the trim strip off of a vetter fairing and lowers? I want to paint mine and need to get them off to properly sand and paint them. Is there a trick to it or a simple route to go? I just don't want to wreck what is there in case I have any problems finding new stuff. Also any ideas about prepping the pebbly part of the lowers? Seems like it may be tough to sand...lol. I am also looking for a left side cover for a 81 MNS if anyone has one in good shape.

    From craigvetter.com:

What is the secret to getting the old edging off the fairing?

I pry off the corner where it is close to the tank with a screw driver. Then grab the loose end with pliers and yank hard, 90 degrees from the fairing. It lets go.

        trim

You can buy new trim but it is very expensive. If your trim is still in good condition leave it on and tape it off before painting. The trim can cost almost as much as the paint job.

You don't do ANYTHING to the "pebbly" part. Never sand it, paint it or otherwise mess with it. It is textured ABS, and is meant to remain black.

I think there are quite a few of us looking for that part. There is one on ebay, but they want a fortune for it. Every once in a while, a used one pops up, but they usually sell for $75-$100.

I don't know where you are getting your trim, but that stuff is relatively cheap. At craigvetter.com, it's $62 for enough to replace the trim on just the fairing, and $82.50 for enough to do the lowers as well. The kit comes with the fancy Hotcha glue.

Don't say you can't I painted my Vetter years ago with standard epoxy primer and House of Colors 2 part urethane, the rough inner/driver side came out good too!

I don't think I would bother with the rough driver/inner side, but I'm going to be painting mine this spring. I'll be using rattle can paint (duplicolor three stage color changing paint) that I will then cover with a few coats of 2 part clear as recommended by duplicolor. It's a good looking paint and I've been wanting to do the bike with it since I got it. I'll be doing the fairing, tank, side covers, saddle bag lids and the trunk sides and lid. I'll try to post pics showing how it looks when I get it done, or barring unforeseen problems those on Loho's ride this summer will be able to see it in person.

I'm not going to replace the trim either, just going to mask it off.

Derwat painted his, inside and out. He removed the trim and rounded the edges to make them smooth and not need the trim.

He also filled in the body lines to make it look 'different' from normal Vetters.

he found a lot of unknown cracks when he did this.

Nice day, if it doesn't rain...
