Any body have good pic's of their 79 specials . I'm trying to figure out how far I'm going to go with the stripping and polishing. I've done the engine from top to bottom and will paint the 1&4 carbs black between the bowls and the bottom of the diaphram cups, but can't decide if I want to do the top of the clutch casing, middle drive and tranny. The cover of the starter motor is plastic isn't it?

I have that fairing on my new (ish) bike. Was it an option, cuz mine also has hard bags. I am considering getting rid of the touring set up and striping it down to just the esentials. Yours is beutiful though.1978 XS1100e Satin black untill I can afford some pearlescent red paint from house of color.

The Vetter Windjammer was an option for a while. The Pacifico setup was the touring package for the '78, and I think Vetter stepped in in '79. However, IIRC, Craig Vetter sold his company in '80, and the new owner (Bell) ran it into the ground.
If you plan to do any distance touring, I strongly suggesting keeping the fairing. It makes a huge difference on long rides. There are plenty of folks here who would be happy to purchase a nice touring package though (or at least pieces of one).1980 XS850SG - Sold

According to Craig Vetter "I started my fairing business in 1966. I sold the company to my banker in 1978. He put it into bankruptcy in 1983. Bell (Helmets) acquired the assets. Bell produced fairings thry 1987. As far as I know, Bell does not supply any parts for old Vetter products"Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

They also make a good primer for plastic that lets you use normal paints on the plastic so your not sruck with the limited number of colors and styles made specifically for plastic. I have used it on plastic containers for geocaching so I could do good cammo so they blend in the the surroundings. I have one that I painted 3 years ago and it still is as hard to see even when looding at it as it was when I painted it.Cy
