  • A little advise needed

I have read several threads dealing with carb synchronizers and know that I need one. From what I've gathered from the different threads, I need to look for one that has a separate valve for each cylinder, separate gauge for each cylinder is prefered and quality of gauge because bouncing or needle fluxuation can be a problem. I saw this set on ebay: eBay item:Vacuum Carburetor Synchronizer carb sync Gauge XS CB GS (#330332065025) and ask that any of you that may have used a set like this would let me know what you think. I don't want to spend this kind of money and end up with junk. Thanks Rick

    Rick,

I have not used any of the fancy ones myself, I just hook up my mityvac to each carb one at a time and read it then adjust. Sounds like you want to be more accurate than that.

When it comes to gages, the issue I see and have seen occur is that each gage has to be calibrated to the others for this set up to be accurate. CarbTune makes a setup that uses steel rods in cylinders as the measuring means. This eliminates the issue of pulling mercury into the engine, or synchronizng the gages. It is also about the same or less than the price on that setup. JAT

      DIY 4-way U-tube manometer.

      Hi Rick,
link 4 perhaps 10 or 12 foot lengths of plastic aquarium tube together (use 2 plastic tees and a short joiner tube if you can't find a cross-connector).
Loop them up over a yardstick, fill the assembly 1/3rd full of ATF and connect each open end to the barbs in the carb mounts.
Use aquarium sleeve pinchers to act as flow reducers.
Use ATF because it's a nice easy to see red color and it won't harm the engine like antifreeze would if it gets sucked in.
13 times as accurate as a mercury set-up, cheap like borscht but alas, not too portable.

Thanks guys for the advice. Fred I like your idea but you lost me at the plastic tees and the joiner tube. Don't take it personal I'm just not the sharpest knife in the drawer

Rick - the gauge set you referenced is a nice one, and worth the money. I had a homemade gauge set (HF vacuum/pressure gauges, and Ace Hardware needle valves) that I calibrated and it worked very well. Last year I bought a carbtune, and while it doesn't sync any better than my gauge set, it's much more compact and easier to carry around. Personally I like the Morgan Carbtune/Colortune bundle - they sell it for 90 english pounds - $142.74 american. That gives you both tools to properly adjust your carbs.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

              dampeners different reservoir?

              Hi,

Are you using dampeners on the homebuilt sticks there, and is there any reason that the bottoms of all four tubes cant be simply put in a tin can with the atf? Thanks in advance.

                interesting

I used a simalar setup until I could afford the Morgan. It does work but the Morgan is really nice and no mess

On the direction of DGXSER I did some researched into the Morgan Carbtune and I Like it. It appears several people on this forum have used it and all seemed to like it too. I am a penny pincher first off because I like the cheapest way of doing things and 2ndly because I'm forced to be due to insufficent funds, however I'm a tool nut and while I cut corners in many other areas, my dad taught me at an early age that you get what you pay for and you can't go wrong buying a quality tool that will last a life time. I do a great deal of mechanic work as a side job so even though its hard to cough up this kind of money right now it could very well pay for its self down the road. Any way I'm getting uncle Sam to buy this by way of my refund.
I do however want to commend those on here that have designed their own carb synchronizers.

I just borrowed my neighbor's set of mercury sticks, and it was SOOO easy! the dampeners are just little inserts that actually sit inside the diameter of the hose, and the whole unit just hangs on my handlebars. If I had the cash, I would definitely go with the Morgan set though, as that Colortune is really the only way to get a precise mixture set on the carbs. Sometimes, 1/4 turn is way too much, and you can't hear the difference between each 1/10th of a turn, but it changes the color in the cylinder just the same.

                              Hi Rick,
the 4 tubes all gotta join together at the bottom.
To do that you need a 4-way joiner.
If you can't find one, join the legs of 2 T-joints together with a short length of tube to make a 4-way joiner.
jmnjrpa's link shows his with a 5-way joiner made with 3 tees to add that fat filler tube with the plug in it.
