Hey guys. I recently purchased a 1980 XS11 that was basically in a plastic crate.I have just about finished reassembling it, but I have what I think is the pick up coil and can't figure where it connects. It is a Hitachi brand and it's new. I'm assuming it belongs to the bike because I have no spark

Welcome to the forum! Do you have the manual yet? You can download one for free from the link in my signature. The pickup coil belongs under the round cover on the left side of the engine, closest to the front. Is your bike a Standard or a Special? If you're not sure, the VIN will tell you, or a couple of pictures, and we can tell you too.
You definitely found the right place for answers about your new bike though!

The only thing I know of for sure that has the Hitachi name on it was the TCI, or ignitor unit. Does it look like the pic C-Bug has, or is it just a square box with two connections/pins showing?
If it is the square box, it sits back over the rear fender.

Hey Jamie,
A picture is definitely going to help. The circuit for spark on these bikes is typically the pick-up coils that C-bug showed give the signal to the TCI which Trbig showed. The TCI then sends the signal to the coil which is mounted under the gas tank just behind the steering neck at the top of the frame. Depending on a few things, there is a ballast resistor in between the coils and the TCI.
I am no electrical guru, but I have not seen anything like what you describe in the circuit to date. Have you tested out the components mentioned above? This device and your lack of spark may not be interconnected.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

The only thing I can think of that is round, and about that size is the stock flasher for the turn signals. Definitely not related to spark though. +1 for pictures. They speak 1000 words, give or take.1980 XS850SG - Sold

Thank you gentlemen for your response. I feel kinda foolish, it turns out to be a voltage regulator upgrade the previous owner purchased and didn't install.
Bike is finally running.
Does anyone have a seat to fit my bike. The seat on there is some kind of ugly high back the previous guy had made up.I'm looking for something decent enought o recoverJamie

Glad you got it running! It always feels good to press the button and have it actually start!
It would help if you created a signature file to tell us what model your bike is. That will help others identify the subtle differences between the models, and be able to troubleshoot things much faster. Also, put your location in your profile. You never know, there might be another XSive just across town who could swing by and give you and had on something.
The seats are different between the Standards and Specials, so that is one thing we need to know, to get you the right seat.1980 XS850SG - Sold
