  • cleaning black chrome exhausts of rust

Ive searched, and there is nothing on this topic. First, what is the stuff on the mns pipes, is it the fabled "black chrome" or powdercoat or maybe ceramic covered?
Depending upon what it is, can anyone tell me how to clean off the superficial rust on the backside of the headpipes?
Its a new bike to me, and dont want to muff up the finish by hamhandedly trying to clean it off with my usual,,, steel wool.
Also, have a little rust on the wheel side of the outer shock body in the upper part, on that same mns. On a regular xs 11, this area is chrome, I assume that on this mns this is simply paint, am I correct?

I used regular chrome polish on my LG pipes with no ill effects. I would imagine over time you could polish all the way through the black chrome.

You are correct. It is Black Chrome, and not paint, ceramic or powdercoat. I have used regular naval jelly-based stuff and it seemed to help quite a bit. Be careful though, because as Pat said, you can polish through the black, to bare metal.

I used polish (Mothers) because the pipes on my bike had very little rust. Surprising because the bike was stored outside, uncovered.
Worst part is a hole on the top of the left muffler right under the passenger peg. It had been welded but that fell out. I had it re-welded. Tough to do because the metal is so thin. Looks like a wart on otherwise flawless exhaust.
<side note> The heat shiels fell off. Need to have nuts welded to crossover to reintall them.
