  • Valve Adjustment in the Philippines

Ok all, thanx so much for the replies and info on the lifter question I had. And, to you Rasputin for finding me the manual!!! Ok, so now, heres my question. In the manual, I see that I need a tappet tool, but the one shown in the manual is only for the XS1100 E. I have an 80 SG. Is there a tool I can buy in the States that will work on my bike?? I have a friend coming to the Philippines in March, and can bring it. Also, do you all replace the pads as it says in the manual, or do you buy shims and place them under the pads??? This sucks trying to get the right stuff overseas!!! Thanks again!!!

The tool is the same for all xs11 motors, all years. You really don't need the tool, just take your measurements and write them down. Loosen the cam cap bolts enough so the shims can be taken out. The shim pads themselves are the only thing you change. Warning: Make sure to follow all instruction in your manual for keeping the motor in time to avoid bending valves. Read this good write-up in post #8 of the following thread...

As Phil said, it's the same for all years. Remember that the power plant on all the XS1100's are just about identical. Even the XJ1100 only varies a tiny bit, adding the YICS thingy into the mix.

I have never messed with my valves, but most people seem to curse that tool, and just do it by hand. There are a few who love it, and have had no problems, but don't think you NEED that tool to do the job.

        Hi Randy,
seems that there's some as loves the tappet tool and some as hates it but there's just the one tool that works for all of the bikes. Have your friend bring you one by all means, if you have it you can always choose to not use it if it don't work for you.
The hard part is finding the different thickness shims you may need to set the clearances properly.
Check out the "shims library" sticky at the top of this forum. A postal swap may work for you.
A thought:- those shims can be made thinner on a magnetic base surface grinder, a machine tool which can be found in almost any jobbing machine shop.
Making them thicker would involve getting them nickel plated.
Both of these are options of last resort. It's far simpler to install shims of the right thickness.

also Honda sells a tool commbination that works great on most all bikes that require shim replacement. it has one cuvred wedge shaped tool with a knob on one end for a handle that is pushed between the cam and the top of the shim and another tool shaped to go between the cam and the top of the shim bucket next to the shim, then the first tool is removed and the second tool holds the bucket down so the shim can be easily moved... works great but as mentioned the position of the piston under the valve you are forcing open must be down. if you would like I can try to get you a part number for this kit.

            Replacement pads

Thanx Irvin, but Im gonna try and get by without it. Ive read on the forum not to buy the pads online, but Im in the Philippines, and dont have much choice. Ive found places to get em, but would like to know if any of you have suggestions? Now, just to make sure, you all are saying that "shimming" the valves is replacing the pads with whatever ones you need to get the clearence right??? Thanx a million for all the help guys!!!

I've got the shims from here before, don't know if they ship over your way. They are pretty reasonable. Our bikes use 29mm shims btw.
