  • Special seat on a Standard

I bought a seat on ebay. The seller says it came off of a 79 Standard. When I examined the seat I found the seat pan has a step curve on the bottom. As I understand it, this indicates it came from a special, where the Standard pan is flat. Is it worth trying to make this fit? What is involved?
I bought this seat because the cover and foam are near perfict. I had intended to send it to the guy in Florida who reworks the foam making a comfortable seat. Any recomendations would be appreciated!

Maybe it's off an 80-81 Standard. Yamaha moved the TCI unit to the front on those, just like the Special TCI location. The 78-79 standard had the rear cowl mount TCI. JAT

By any chance do you have a picture of a special, or 80-81 standard with the seat off showing how and where the TCI unit is mounted?

Don't have a pic of an 80-81 seat, but here's the 79 Special's TCI mounting location and the seat pan. HTH

You could always move your TCI up to the forward location on the plastic fenderwell, the wires should be long enough.

I had an extra seat for my 80 special. It turned out to be an 80 standard seat.
The pans are different and will not interchange as the pans are different.I ended up selling that seat to a list member.

The Special TCI's are all in the same place, all years, on the front inner fenderwell. Only the 78-79 Standards have a different rear TCI location.

The rear TCI mount is for the 78-9 Std.

Check your VIN number on the frame and the engine with the chart in the following link, it'll tell you what ya got...

The '78-79 standard TCI mounts on the chrome part of the fender. The standard fender is also hinged (remove two bolts and it swings up to remove the rear wheel). If your fender isn't hinged, it's a special.

                          Hi 1st,
what ya got may not be what the bike started out as. XS11 parts swap like LEGO. Tanks, forks, gauges, you name it. A Standard can be changed into a near enough Special or vice-versa or parts of either can be combined into a hybrid that suits the owner's special needs or just to use whatever second-hand parts are available to get back on the road after a crash.
The link that bikerphil posted will let you check the frame and engine serial numbers to see what the bike was when it left the factory and if the bike has the original engine.
A photo will let folks know what the bike has been made into.

according to the engine, i have a 1980 SG. now someone please tell me what SG means. does that mean i have a special or a standard? and if it is a special, does that mean someone moved the box? i just want to know so that when i get stuck and have to ask the gods of all XS what to do, i can get the right answer for my bike. i guess i don't really care what it is, as long as it goes....

The 'G' tells you what year it is (in this case, 1980) and the 'S' denotes a 'Special'. No 'S' and you have a standard.

Although with all the Frankenbikes out there, you really need to check both the frame AND the motor, as there's enough differences in the frames that if a motor swap has been done you can get in all sorts of trouble.
