I know there have been some threads about who WANTS fat tires, but who's already got em? And how'd you do it? And how big is it? Who has the BIGGEST? I want to see the different methods people used out there and what you ended up with. The few Ive seen are very different than your average XS/XJ and are very inspiring. Pics people! I know of xschop's with a SSSA and mathh, who has a similar setup to what Im building. Who else? Show off your fat ass!

I would think the most inexpensive method would be some sort of homebrew rigid setup.
My method should end up under $1000 completed, but its kind of a centerpoint of my build and requires some custom machining. But the bike should still be completed for under $2500 total. So once it all works out, the finished product will feel inexpensive to me.
But I wanna see whos already got em. Or is it just a handful a people that decided to go that far with it? I know there is more than one chaindrive conversion out there.1981 XS11SH Custom Project - Juggernaut

The only 'cheap' method I can think of is to notch the OEM swingarm deeper. I'm in the process of doing that, and found if you run an exposed driveshaft, you could fit up to a 6.25" wide tire (assuming basically near-zero clearance). I'm going to run a minimal cover on mine (to keep junk out of the final-drive spline) and that reduces clearance by about .050". If you're willing to offset the wheel with a spacer inside the drive hub, you could maybe pick about .125" more for a total tire width of 6.5". But once you go above 6", you need to check the rear fender mount (at least on the standards w/stock fender) as this bracket has some narrow spots, and the 'offset' method will really cause problems here.
The swingarm swap that 'Paulbaut' did (another thread) is interesting and appears to allow a large tire, but I'd be a little leary of using a 650 final drive with the 11's power.

Hard tail, chain drive, 250 rear tire n u?
I have a 81 xs 1100 I am currently working on. I just started my second rebuild with changes of chain drive, 250 rear tire, and a hard tail. Next week when I get home it should be a roller and I will have the hard tail I welded up.Last edited by forplynu2; 01-26-2010, 02:09 AM.

tire offsets etc
i have always wanted a fatty tire on the back so i purchased a single side swing arm , wheel and 180 tire from a honda goldwing gl1800..
How critical is it that my tire stay in line with the bike????
.. the reason i ask that
is i have seen big wide tire kits for many kinds of bikes and there offset as much as 2 inches.. and not inline with the rest of the bike. I am guessing at this point but im only off about .5 inch . ill see when we go to install and line up the bike.. its about two weeks out from that point.1978 E XS1100 purchased for =$600.00
crap load of time spent modifying it = Priceless
My bike has the XS motor but can't really call it XS11
(or at least it still looks like the XS motor)
it has about 50% of the frame left from the XS bike

I have seen that set up on a V-Max (old model) and it looks fantastic.
When the wheels are 0.5 inch out of line it will not be a problem unless your name is Valentino Rossi. Lots of old V-Maxes left the factory that way! The only way to get them in line was fitting wider wheels and tires! Now, you can feel they're not inline when you are a canyon carver, but my guess is you're notXS1100 3X0 '82 restomod, 2H9 '78 chain drive racer, 3H3 '79 customized.

My wife rides a V-Max and there's a lot of similarities in the swingarm compared to the XS. I want my main project for the winter to be a V-Max swingarm and 200mm rear tire. I think it will look great with the Vedder bags and no trunk. I already have some spare V-Max parts and what I don't have will come from E-Bay or craigslist. My concerns are for the width of the frame, the rear suspension mounts (shocks/springs), and the driveshaft. I know the Max shaft is larger but I don't know about the u-joint and pinion. I have a while to work this out so we'll see what happens. A somewhat minor concern will be how the wife reacts to the 200mm tire since she's been hounding me to do the 200 on her ride. I might end up doing two...Me Make Big Dings Wid Hamma N Welda
