  • Carb bowls

Ok, so in carb cleaning 101, it shows a passage that needs to be cleaned in the carb bowls. Mine were plugged and even the ultra sound didn't clean the passage. I tried wire, needles etc to no avail. Couldn't get any compressed air through them, so I put a small drill bit in there and twisted it in my fingers and finally got it through the gunk. Trouble is when I looked at the bit after I had aluminum on it, I figure I cleaned them by reaming the damn holes. Any one know what purpose this passage has and is a choke point an absolute requirement.

It supplies the choke (fuel inricher) that tiny brass tube that slides inside the bowl feeds the gas up to the choke. You will have a hard time starting the bike if they are blocked.

      Hi Mack,
typically, if the hole has a removable brass let in it, that jet is a metering orifice.
A passage is just a passage, opening it up a little should not change anything.

I had a really bad one once in some carbs I was flipping. Through that bowl in some chem dip for a few days. It will take care of it.

There is a metering jet of sorts pressed into the bottom of that gallery. As I understand it, if the size is increased too much the chock will be over fed fuel when the chock is engaged. I do not know if enlarging this opening effects normal operation of the carb when the chock is not engaged. Theres a good photo of what is at the bottom of that gallery on here somewhere.

              WoW

The carbs in that thread are the cleanest ones I've seen. Mine weren't that good when they were in the show room when I bought the bike. Anyway by the sounds of it, I've inadvertently toasted the bowls for #1 & #2. Don't suppose anyone has a source for replacements. Also discovered the floats for 2 & 4 have holes in them. I haven't looked at the diaphrams yet but the way things are going so far, one or more will be crap too. That green goo turned out to be mold. Very smelly and thick. I was sick for a couple days after removing the bowls. Had to throw out all the towls etc I was using at the time as the stench filled the whole building and was causing headaches. I remember now that my air box was full of mold as well and I had to get a different one from Andreas. Wonder what the heck could cause that much mold and slime in a sealed space like these normally occupied with gas. Unless it was in the gas??? One way to dispose of Toxic waste ???
