  • pitted fork tubes

I know there is a previous thread. I am wondering how you are dealing with the problem. Did you all get new tubes from Forking by Frank? Or, is there any other way to deal with the problem ingenious XS gurus figured out? I heard that, in old days, the mechanics used to sand and smooth them so that they dont eat the seals.

When I got the bike, the inner tubes were leaky but looked clean. I guess that the inner tubes sagged into the outer tubes so much to hide the pitted part...

Forks from what other model are good for an XS1100 Special? I fear if this will turn out to be another case of X works for Standard but not for Special...

As for the part numbers, does Yamaha do the same thing as Suzuki making part numbers different even though the two parts are the same if the machines they are used for are different?

Keep your eye on craigslist or whatever local classifieds you have.
Most XSes I got for $200.00 or less and got em all running except three of which one will be running someday.

The tubes can be repaired, but have no idea what it would cost.
Most likey cheeper to get em from franks?

No, the pits are above normal travel. If you need to change out the seals get them from PnM or almost anywhere except Yamaha$$$.

The sad thing is that I put on the new seals and then fount out the pits that were hidden in the level below the seals when the seals were broken.

It appears you are talking about the dust seals. The oil seals are inside the outer tubes. You have to remove the inner tube to replace the oil seal properly. In doing so you would have seen the pits. Your dust seals may still be good. You just need to replace the oil seals when you fix your fork crisis.

i am talking about fork seals, not the dust seals. Since I had to get outside help for something else, I had them do the fork seals for me too. Only after the job was done, the inner tube pits became visible as the part of the inner tube that were sagged into the outer tube with leaky seals rose up.

Then all you need is the inner tubes from that list. I was looking for the whole fork assembly (much harder to find).

Couple of Special sets on eBay now, but kinda pricey. Good sets come up pretty often for under $50.

Are you suggesting that any inner tubes from Mikes 37 mm tube list are direct swap? Is it that easy with inner tube swapping?
