Big Trouble

So I just finished grinding the rust of the frame and since I'll have the tank painted at the same time I pulled the petcocks off and cleaned the shelac out as best I could for now. They were in rough shape so I figured it might be a good time to look inside the carbs. I rolled them over and all this green slime came out the hoses and when I pulled the bowl off number one it is packed with this dark green goo. Everything seems stuck together, I can't even move the choke slide. Not good. Anyway, I've been reading through some threads and carb cleaning 101 and there is no way to find any of the jets etc until I clean the goo out. I was reading a post where larrym was coaching rickrod3 and he was saying that the plunger seals,butterfly shaft seals etc. are suseptable to damage from carb cleaner. I have an ultrasound machine and was wondering if I pulled the upper diaphrams out would it be ok to emerse the whole rig in the simple green and leave it on for... a long time, or would this also damage these seals. Also is it a really bad idea to disasemble the bank of carbs and clean the entire mechanism or is better to see what it looks like after the ultra sound.

Hey Mack if you just want to do a pre clean and are worried about the seals I don't see why you couldn't soak them in kerosene or gas.I'd think that should get most the big stuff off without hurting the gaskets.Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

Take the jets and float needles out and soak them in carb cleaner. Find a way to keep the butter fly open and let the USC do it's job ,30 min to an hour should do it if it isn't too bad . It might be a good to take each carb apart and then clean then you can replace everything that might be worn,better to be safe than sorry and you have lots of time to get ur done.

If they are that bad, just put them in the USC and let it rip! DO remove the slide, but other than that the rest should go in with no problem. Once you have most of the slime off, you can start the actual cleaning.
The seals will go bad in a hurry from carb cleaner, but simple green, Kerosene, Gasoline, or Diesel Fuel should not hurt them.

I used a mix of Simple Green and Dawn dishwashing soap in the Sonic cleaner. What a bunch af junk came out of there.

That was after hosing them down with the carb cleaner.

Ok so here's my plan. I'll pull the diaphrams out of the tops, then soak the whole thing intact in gas for a few days to see what happens. If enough of this crap comes off then I can start the first cleaning. As it is now the floats aren't even distinguishable, let alone the posts or pins etc. Wish me luck lads.

I have one bank of 'spare' carbs that i want to try and clean up/polish. however i wont be able to start on them for a couple of months......large project in the house going on right now thats eating up time....

Starting on a set for my XJ. Not nearly as bad as you describe your's are. I've always gone anal on the ones I've done before and decided this time to try the Yamaha Carburetor Cleaner Dip. Search this site and the internet for lots of info on it. Supposed to be rubber safe and since it is to be mixed with water that sounds right. Might look into it as a possible way to break that mess up. Going to pull the slides and leave everthing else in place. Will pull all apart after the first soak to go anal on all the internals and passageways.

Hold Your Breath....

I miss the good ole "mechanic" days when we had access to a parts washing tank. The tank used recirculating Stoddard Solvent as a dip/bath along with a flexible hand spout for directing the solvent into nooks.

Mineral spirits is about the same thing: Paint thinner.

Have to use gloves and not breathe though: loss of the brain cells ya got left. Flammable too. But then anything which is gonna attack the Green Goo and win should be kept out of the reach of small children.
