It's amazing what a person could do with a little bit of skill and desire to get something done.
Quick question: Did you reuse the factory seat mounting brackets (rear bolt downs) and did you make some kind of tongue to hold the front down (like stock)?-- Clint

I think for your bike, you could no longer use the original mounting bolt locations as you cut them off on your frame.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Bungee chords work well holding a seat down with no mounting tabs/bolts
On the last seat pan i made like that, i removed the mounting bolts from the old pan, attached them to the mounting tabs on the frame, and carefully placed the fiberglass around them(several wraps of tape around the threads to allow them to slide thru the fiberglass later on). i took some 1/16th thick sheet metal and cut small strips, about 2" wide and 4" long. i tack welded some nuts to the topside. i worked them into the fiberglass matting. same basic process for the front "tounge". I took the original tounge off the seat pan, slid it into the 'slot' and braced it from below with tape, wood and wire.
i pre-drilled it for small bolts. started laying 'glass and again worked a small metal plate with nuts welded on. took a little time, but to me it was worth the extra support rather than having to redo the whole thing later if it broke.
JMO. the foam i picked up from a marine store. shaping it was a real pain in the a$$. finally borrowed a hot knife from a buddy and that worked a little better.
get creative. its fun!!!'81H (my first XS ) "Grey Ghost"

i used the gas tank bolt to hold the front of my seat pan. and as for the rear bolts i i made two little flaps on the seat pan and i will bolt it directly to the frame from those.1979 xs1100sf
