    Hey Pete,

Ok, sorry. The fork oil IS 225cc for our special so that is probably correct.

However, the float height is not differenciated between specials or standards and according to this manual is the same 78-81.

    Just saying!

It may be possible your floats are set too high. JAT

My 80 special with 79 carbs float height is 27.5mm.

Had to set them there to keep it from flooding and running way to rich.

These carbs seem to have individual personalities.

      I set them at 23mm,
setting them at roughly 22-23 isnt good enuff, the bike will
      accelerate and run like crap.

With regards to the fork oil, our bikes are similar to the specials in the states, im running progessive front springs, but if your running stock springs
      the manual states 225ml.
O.K. I'll have a go at them tonight set at 23 and new "O" rings, I'll get some tubing and make sure I can't blow through them.
225mls I'll also through into the forks 10W, do you run any air in them?

One other thing I forgot to mention, when I had the bike running, carby #1 would pop/backfire similar to an old single cylinder engine more like a PSSST noise?

Hey Greg, take a look in the back of that book. I saw one (I think it was that book) that had an addendum in the back showing float heights for later models.

NO....I looked and don't see anything.

Good to know though. Thanks Bigfoot

I learn something new nearly every day here.

I talk way too much on here and I need to be worthy of the GURU status I've very nearly achieved here with my mostly useless banter.

            Just enjoy the company.

            Just trying to help.

I know how clueless I was, and in some respects still am, I was when first I got here.

Had to go get my book. If you have a clymer, look in section 12. Says supplement. Has info for everything that should have been added to every chapter for the 80-81 models. And don't beat yourself up too much Greg. I screwed up the first time I did my carbs for the same reason. Didn't know about section 12 until Russ79 showed me.

I have two of the clymers and they both have the supplement.
I didn't see that part the first time I did XS11 carbs either. It
made for some tail chasing till I figured it out.

The oil leak sounds like the valve cover (tappet cover) is leaking around the spark plug area and the oil is draining out the drain hole for the spark plg recesses. BTDT

                  Fuel leak could be anything.
                  XSokieSPECIAL,
Spot on the oil leak was infront of the carbys but behind #2 spark plug on the tappet cover, if you know what I mean.... I owe you a beer
