  • Progress, but still need a few more parts...

    Well, things are coming along. The gas tank is being derusted as I type (electrolysis) and is coming along nicely. Several of the smaller parts are on order (rubber bits, new front tire, etc.) and I am REALLY looking forward to getting this bike back on the road.

    The newest "issue" is the gas filler cap rubber seal. That too is falling apart. Bikebandit doesn't have this part to order.

    I would rather get the original part, but if I can't find one, I was thinking about cutting out a disk of 1/8" thick rubber and attaching it to the filler cap with RTV. It wouldn't be perfect, bit would HAVE to be better than what I have now.

    Any suggestions on either were to get this part or a better way to make something work? Thanks again for all the help!

    Might try going through this thread. Don't know how the gasket is holding up but maybe DGXSER will chime in. Good luck.

      Mikesxs.com has one, P/N 20-0036 that'll fit. Got one on mine. 2 yrs. old and it's cracking already. Must be all the crap they put in the fuel now.

        So far so good on the gasket. I have had fuel in the tank but not filled it just yet. It may be early to say for sure in the long run but for the $2-3 I spent on it, I figure I can't go to wrong.

          Don,
          Glad to hear that it is "so far, so good". I have a couple tanks here and all the gas cap seals act like hundered year old rubber! Don't think they were ever replaced though.

          Phil has a point about the gas now days. I ran some of the alcohol laced gas through a moped some years back and it just disolved all of the plastic that the fuel contacted. Bike just setting in a pool of gas when I got off work. I'm afraid it will only get worse.

            You guys are a life saver! I'm not sure WHY I didn't think about checking MikesXS out for this part... I just ordered about $50 worth of jets from him!

              Well, things are progressing. I finished up the electrolysis on the tank this morning. I left it running overnight. I would pull the anode every couple of hours and wipe off the accumulated junk so it wouldn't build up so bad that it started falling off the anode and dropping back into my tank. Of course, overnight it was on it's own! That seems to have worked as there was very little "stuff" floating around inside the tank when I was done

              I still can't believe how much crap was pulled out of that gas tank. It looks almost new inside there now.

              After dumping it and rinsing it out, I filled it back up with hot water and added about a cup of CLR to it. The main goal being to chemically treat the tank to prevent the fine surface rust from forming before I get it back on the road. It seems to be working as it did form that surface rust after rinsing it, but it is almost dry after draining and rinsing the CLR out (which removed the surface rust) and the steel is still nice and clean. Hopefully it will stay that way for the next couple of weeks while I get this thing back on the road.

                Hi Clint,
                what works to keep my gas tanks from rusting after draining them for Saskatoon's 5 months of winter storage is to dump a cupful or so of gear oil in there and swish it around to coat the interior.
