      adjusting proved unsucessfull

Opened the Idle to 3 full turns and tightened the throttle stop screw.
Could not get the thing to run off the choke.
What I found was the idle when on full choke got higher. Too high started to race. 1/2 choke behaved like the full on choke previously did.
I guess opening the butterflies by tightening the throttle stop screw caused more gas to flow from the choke.

I will be printing out Larry's list and going through them again as well as all the other things you guy's mentioned.

Starting to think I may have the wrong pilot jet.
When Tested the pilot circuit the pilot jet was out.
The way cleaner came out of all of the passage ways really seemed unlikely it was clogged.
Something is wrong thats for sure.
I'm done for today don't want to do more damage than good ;so I will let it sit a day or so and pull the carbs for the third time.
I'll go visit the family and give them a chance to agravate me a while (just kidding)

      Thanks all
      Rick

I scanned through but didn't find any mention of the condition of the pilot screws tips. Any chance one or more or all are broken off? This is a very common thing on Es and Fs due to the sine point used on the early carbs.

          It's Suckin'...

too much air from somewhere. How are the carb boots? Also, as Larrym suggested, check the b-fly shaft seals.

            Carb boots are brand new.
I probably should check for vacuum leaks before pulling them.
All new boots and vacumm hoses though.
Pilot screw tips also new and I checked for broken tips on the second cleaning
            Thanks

Are the floats all straight? They can get twisted. So you have to check both sides.
Also the float height can be a little sensitive.I saw earlier you posted they are set at 24mm with plastic floats(IIRC).The plastic floats in the 80 and 81 models are set at 23mm.24mm would be lean.

Also, make sure that if you are sing new gaskets for the float bowls, you ensure that the openings are punched out of the gaskets.

There is a "main" air jet in the inlet bell that is very small and is pressed-in rather than screwed in. Make sure it is clean. I think I would warm up the bike to get the oil nice and hot, shut it down to let the head pipes cool, and then start it up and rev it to the throttle position that was giving you trouble and then check the head pipes to see which one(s) are not getting hot. That would at least give you a hint about the offending carb(s).

PS, after you can tell it certain pipes are cooler, you might investigate the pickup coil thing, or fuel delivery issues...

One more thing... You can also run the bike on the PRIME position in case there is something wacky about the petcock/octo.

He's obviously getting the fuel to the bowls or it wouldn't run on the enricher
                      either.

                      Rick,

When you rebuilt the carbs... did you replace the mixture screws.

If so..did you check to see if the old ones had been broken off in the idle cicuit orafaces?

Does it run if you open up the throttle?

Still sounds like he is running a bit lean. Better, but not quite there. Try another turn on the screws. On Thunderstruck they were at three turns out when I got it and it is full out stock air box and exhaust. If your exhaust are a little less baffled (than we are anyway ) You could be pulling more air than stock jetting was designed for.

Keep working those screws, if your 5-6 turns out and still not rich enough, you may need larger pilot jets.

You can run with the choke circuit longer with the choke pulled because it draws fuel from the bottom rather than the top. But, fuel delivery problems to the carb bowls are probably rare. I would think that if he can get it to 2700 rpms or higher, the main needles will lift making the pilot circuit less involved. If it can be reved that high by gradually increasing throttle, and it is topped-out, there is something else wrong besides the pilot circuit.

                            agreed skids,

I'm starting to lean towards an ignition problem.

                            Most likely pickup coil wires.

                            Intermittent contact.

                            IMHO

But then it shouldn't run on the enricher either. Duh!
