Well I've got a leaky valve seal in no 1.Has anyone tried pulling the cams and replacing the valve seals without pulling the head?I thought I could pressurise the cylinder and change the seals like we do on cars.

If you're that far... take the carbs out, drop the exhaust, and 14 nuts and the head is yours.
Not sure how you'd get anything in there to compress the springs to get the retainer clips off the valve anyway. Plus.. one of the valves depressurizes and drops down againt the piston, you have to take it off anyway to get it back.
Just seems to me to be the REALLY hard way to go about doing it. While the head is off, you can make sure the valves seal and do a light lapping if needed also. Tip the head on edge and pour some gas down into the ports.. and watch for wet spots around the valves. Let it sit a few minutes... then flip it over and do the other side.
Just my 2 cents...

Yeah you guys are right.I tore it down this morning.I couldn't figure out anything to compress the valves with so I'm pulling the head now.Good idea Tod to check the seats while I have it off.I might as well get the cam gears notched while it's apart.I @#$@$% up the valve cover gasket and have to order one now anyway.Good thing it's nasty snow and ice here right now she' s probably going to be down a weak or two.

tw1980,
Why not order a whole set of gaskets. comes with valve seals exhaust gaskets Head gasket and cover gasket you will need anyway the balance can be saved for someones rainy day.

I already have the valve seals and other gaskets.
Yikes!! It looks likes she got attacked by a herd of carbon snakes!Lots of carbon in the combustion chambers and on top of the pistons. The heads are upside-down soaking in break cleaner and so are the cylinders.I've been running premium fuel(regular pings)I think I'll try to get mid grade to work.

Regular doesn't run to bad in mine but it makes the detonation problem worse, premium runs like sh*t in my bike. I found the mid grade to be a pretty good compromise.
Once you clean all that carbon outta there and put it all back together, you'll be able to run regular fuel (lower compression). At least that's the way it was in my case.

You could be right, but it pinged on reg fuel before it had time build up carbon.I have a feeling I'm just going to have to pull the head every winter and remove the carbon.Does anybody else with higher compression have this problem?

Run some seafoam through it every once in a while.

Hey Terry,
If the bikes tuned and running properly, you shouldnt
be getting any large carbon deposits, even with a high compression engine.
Did you get the DJ kit sorted out properly.

Yeah I thought I did the bike ran great the plugs were always the right color. Are you thinking a rich condition?

Terry,
If its running rich it will be more sooty
than carbon, If the bikes running lean, it'll
run hot causing oil to burn which causes
carbon to buid up.
How did you end up setting the carbs with the dj kit?
