    Is Pick-Up Coil Interchangeable

    Can the pick-up coil from a 1979 XS1100 be used on a 1980 XS1100LG?

    Thanks

      skids,

      Just out of curiosity,

Is it the coils themselves that are different or is it just the breaker plate?

The 81's are missing the centrifugal advance thing that is beneath the plate. I think the pu coils are different than earlier models also. There is another post going on the forum about it. The brain box is totally different and the 81 has no ballast resistor either. I am not too sure about the reach of the wiring between the 79's and 80's, but hey you can certainly fix that!

Yep, the actual coils are no different, its just the other guts in there that are different due to no mech advance mech. 2H78167610 is the pick-up coil part number for ALL models and year of XS1100s.

The "brain box" of an 81 is different in that it contains the "mech" advance built into the TCI. The TCI for an XJ is different yet as it also incorporates the vacuum advance into it, they also deciced the pickup coils and the plate were a black magic box on the XJ models.

Thanks for the feedback all. Sorry for the redundant question, I missed the earlier post.
