  • Choke Problem

I have a 1980 XS 1100G. My problem is that when the choke is on the bike only fires on 3 cyclinders, number 1 will not fire. As soon as I turn the choke off it picks up the cylinder and runs fine. The carbs have been professionally cleaned and adjusted. Does anyone have any suggestions how to fix this?

    Thanks,
    Terry

O.K. partner I don't know if this place is big enough for two Terry's!Just kidding.Welcome to the forum.I've never run into that specific problem but I would have to assume you have carb problems. There is about a million posts here on carb problems.I'd recommend using the search function and also checking the tech section on what to do with a neglected XS11.Good luck!!

Hi Terry, Welcome to the "Obsession" You might want to check your spark plug color on that cylinder if you have new plugs the color (black carbon = rich mixture ~ gray/white = lean) will still tell You whats going on in the cylinder. Let us know what You find and We'll be glad to point you in the right direction
1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )
      1979 XS1100SF (stock-euro mods planned)
      1984 XV700L Virago (to be hot-modded)
      1983 XJ750MK Midnight Maxim (semi-restored DD)
      1977 XS650D ( patiently awaiting resto)

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

I would suggest you get the bike running on enriched fuel (thes ebikes do not cut off air flow "choking" the engine, they add more fuel to the mix "enriching it"), let it run for a few minutes with no 1 not firing and see what the plug looks like, sooty or dry. Then run it with the enricher off and see what it looks like then.

It sounds like it might be running rich on number 1 to me.Maybe a float set too high?Or plugged air jet?Are you running pods or stock air filter?

            professionally cleaned

If not done by Prom then,
I'd pull #1's fuel bowl and check that the fuel passage in it is clear.
Only takes a little longer than checking the plug.

I am betting that it has a clogged float bowl starter jet or passage. Remove the bowl and clean out the jet and passage. This is where that brass "straw" fits into the bowl, and the other side where fuel enters. Be careful if you give it a blast of carb cleaner or you will get it right in your eyeon't ask how I know.
