    Oil Leak ?

    Just got the bike and am chasing a few leaks. There is a small leak at the front of the engine. It appears to be coming from a small round disc on a casting that protrudes from the block. This is dead centered at the front of the engine. What is this and do they normally leak? I know I need a manual, just don't have one yet. Anyone reccomend a good one?

    Almost sounds like your cam chain tensioner. If it is, you can pull the center of it out (just a plug) and then put on a layer of RTV sealant. I just had to redo mine b/c I didn't let the bike site overnight to cool down first last time two years ago.

    Haynes and Clymer make decent manuals for these bikes, I've got one but don't remember which - it's got a picture of a special on the front.

      Rob Mills at rockjok@imt.net has a very extensive manual available on CD for a very reasonable cost. Contact him to see if any are available. Other then that, keep an eye on Ebay and Yahoo. Clymer's is (I think)still available new.

        The caps are also still available from Yamaha and are cheap. Make sure that the crankcase breather is not plugged because it will make the plug leak worse and can actually cause it to pop out. It is a good time to adjust the cahin tension. Make sure you are careful with the torque of the stopper bolt 'cause the tensioner is EASY to strip and can lead to major engine damage. (Ask Dave Hogue or me!)

          You guys are Great! I'll run right down to Yamaha on Monday and get a new plug. A little rtv is probably a good idea too. Thanks!
