  • taking apart start button

In order to replace a bad start button, I took apart the switch casing. the button seems to be encased in the alminum box that is part of the switch casing. I took off a screw inside the case but it didnt do anything.

How do you take apart the button and put in the new spring and the tiny metal piece?

I think that it clips onto itself.Separate the opening with a small screwdriver and button and spring should come out.Put back in and close.

I just used a small screw driver and pried that housing away.
Replaced button and reassembled with no problem.
If I remember right I pried it "up" if that makes sense.
It fits on one way only.

BTW, hope I'm not having a "senior moment"

THe horn and start button are identical pieces. The assembly is a horseshoe piece of metal with slots at the end of the horseshoes and a big circle cutout in the middle piece. The end is what holds the wire connector with one side fo the contact points (they are identical to the old points from a distributer setup of years gone by). The other point that you purchased goes into the back side of the button that goes into the hole with the spring being between the two. The bottom side of that horseshoe piece sits behind a tang that stick up from the bottom of the switch housing to retain it there.

Pull the screw out, then get a small screwdriver under the bottom of the horseshoe piece and pry it up slightly then push the button part to slide the assembly out of the housing. Then you can pry the horseshoe open and get the back piece out so you can replace the button and spring along with the new contact point.

        Hope that all makes sense.
