  • Is this where the timing cover goes?

    Hi All,

I have a PDF manual that I downloaded, but I'm kind of having a tough time seeing if this is where my timing cover goes. I think it is, but I just wanted to be sure.

    Does that sound about right?

The timing cover is that big round thing at the far right of the picture on the side of the engine. Has 4 bolts holding it on.

So is there some kind of screw that's supposed to be in there? Currently mine has a leak coming from there. I think it might be oil.

Outlined in GREEN is the timing cover. The item you outlined in RED is the cam chain tensioner as previously mentioned. IT should have a plug in the end to keep the oil from drooling out of it.

If your talking about where the arrow points there is supposed to be a plastic/rubber cap/seal. The correct way to fix it is to get a replacement seal/plug but from what I have heard you can also clean it up good and put some good RTV in there and let it cure and it will stop the leak. Mine has the plug in it, and it was leaking shortly after I changed the engine but I put the oil stop leak I use in old engines (don't recall the brand off the top of my head but it works really well on old seals that are not damaged) and it stopped within a week. No other leaks at this time either.

Oh snap, I was reading the wrong thing in the PDF. I was reading the text for the image below which was the actual timing cover. I'm such a spazz.

RTV, Right Stuff, ... anything like that will work great.
It's a common problem... BTDT. Later in life, if you need to do a TC adjustment, just dig it out, then reseal it again. No biggie... but an oil leak there sure can be!

As mentioned, timing cover is on the left side of the motor w/ 4 screws.
No oil should leak from there... and if it does, there's a seal at the block in there where the crank protrudes... sometimes wears out & needs replaced.
There's also one on the opposite side, behind the alternator as well.

Thanks Don for the colored arrows... I don't have the technology...

Cool, thanks for your help everyone. I'll get some RTV before I start working on things again.

Did a "temporary" rtv fix on the cam chain adjuster 3 years. Not a drop since.

A PO of Thunderstruck had an interesting cure for the cam chain adjuster end. He took the rubber end piece from a crutch pushed a quarter inside it, and then used a hose clamp to hold it on. IT never leaked a drop int he time I have owned it. I since converted to the XVZ adjuster and eliminated the issue, byt transfered the crutch end to Banshee (the project bike).
